Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory condition that mostly affects the spine, though it can also affect joints too. AS can cause the vertebrae to fuse together, leading to a rigid and hunched posture, though this isn’t really an early sign of AS.

Ankylosing spondylitis symptoms are typically stiffness and back pain – these are generally the early warning signs to help with diagnosis, too. Over time, the condition can affect other joints and even organs like the eyes, heart, and lungs. The onset usually occurs in late adolescence or early adulthood, and it tends to be more common in men than women.

Treatments for Ankylosing Spondylitis

Treatment for AS aims to manage symptoms and slow down the progression of the disease. Unfortunately, there is no cure right now besides managing the symptoms. Here are some common approaches to do that:

Medication

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are often the first line of treatment to manage pain and inflammation, for example ibruprofen. In more severe cases, biologic medications like TNF inhibitors may be prescribed. These are a direct and immediate way to reduce inflammation.

Physical Therapy

Regular exercise and physical therapy can help maintain spinal flexibility and posture. A physiotherapist can guide you through specific exercises tailored to your condition, though try to find one with good experience of treating AS patients.

Surgery

In extreme cases where the spine has fused in a debilitating manner, surgical intervention like spinal osteotomy may be considered. However, the three treatments mentioned tend to be done in order (though they’re not mutually exclusive), meaning that medication is an immediate step, while surgery is a last-call.

Is It Considered a Disability in Australia?

In Australia, ankylosing spondylitis can be considered a disability under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992. This legislation protects individuals from discrimination based on their disability in various areas such as employment, education, and access to public spaces. However, the classification as a disability can depend on the severity of the condition and its impact on your daily life.

Insurance and Pension

Some health insurance plans may cover treatments for AS, including medication and physical therapy. It’s crucial to review your policy to understand what is covered. You may be eligible for the Disability Support Pension if the condition severely limits your ability to work.

Multiple Perspectives

While AS can be a debilitating condition, advancements in treatment options have improved the quality of life for many individuals. From a medical standpoint, early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for managing symptoms effectively. Legally, protections are in place to prevent discrimination based on this condition. However, societal awareness and understanding of AS as a disability may still be lacking, which calls for increased advocacy and education.

Conclusion

Ankylosing spondylitis can significantly impact a person’s quality of life and may be considered a disability in Australia depending on its severity. Treatment options are available to manage symptoms, and legal frameworks exist to protect against discrimination. Understanding your rights and treatment options is essential for navigating life with this condition.

Recovering from whiplash – a long but reachable journey https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/health-wellness/recovering-from-whiplash-a-long-but-reachable-journey-february-2023/ Thu, 16 Feb 2023 15:52:44 +0000 https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/?p=2456592 Whiplash might be a common neck injury, but this does not mean it cannot be untreated. Ensure you visit a doctor for further investigation

The post Recovering from whiplash – a long but reachable journey appeared first on Australian Times News.

]]>
Have you been involved in a car accident, and the impact caused a neck injury? This is most probably whiplash, and regardless of how painful or frustrating it might be, it is a treatable condition.

Whiplash or whiplash-associated disorder (WAD) is, more often than not, caused by a sudden, forceful back-and-neck movement of the neck, which typically manifests during a car accident. This kind of injury is quite common among victims of road accidents and, surprisingly or not, is one of the mildest. Vehicle crashes can lead to a number of injuries, some more severe than others, such as concussions, lacerations, burns, spinal cord injuries, broken bones, whiplash, post-traumatic stress disorder, and in the worst cases, internal bleeding and amputations. If you have got just a neck strain, you are kind of lucky.

Nonetheless, let us find out more about this condition, which can keep you from living a normal life for a while, and what is to be done to make your recovery smoother.

What is whiplash?

Whiplash or neck sprain occurs when the head suddenly and forcefully moves forward, backwards, or sideways during an impactful accident. Most people associate this condition with a car accident, which is indeed one of the most common situations where the injury happens, but there are also other ways in which whiplash can be sustained, such as horse-riding accidents, contact sports, falling off a bike, amusement park rides, or physical abuse.

This condition feels so painful because your neck’s soft tissues (the ligaments and muscles) extend beyond their regular motion range. Overstretched tendons, thus, lead to various symptoms, which, nevertheless, may not appear immediately after the accident.

How does it feel?

As previously mentioned, whiplash symptoms may be delayed, usually for 24 hours after the impact. In most cases, these symptoms appear gradually and become more severe with each day passing. This is what you may feel if you suffer from whiplash:

 • constant tiredness
 • blurred vision
 • dizziness
 • headaches
 • neck pain and stiffness
 • pain in the shoulder or between the shoulder blades
 • sleep disturbances
 • muscle spasms

Less common symptoms of this condition may involve:

 • ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
 • difficulty focusing or remembering
 • irritability
 • low back pain
 • vertigo – a sensation that you are spinning or moving

How is whiplash diagnosed?

If you have recently been involved in an accident that resulted in neck strain, you should immediately see a doctor. Whiplash might be a common injury of the neck, but this does not mean it can be left untreated. So, ensure you visit a doctor for further investigation and help them put the diagnosis. Your physician will ask questions about the incident’s circumstances, where you feel pain, and whether the pain is sharp, shooting, or dull. Any additional information would help to put an accurate diagnosis.

More often than not, an interrogation is not enough; hence, the doctor will do a physical exam and ask you to perform some simple tasks to check your neck’s range of motion, neck/back/shoulder tenderness, or any reflex in your limbs. And if it is still unclear, your physician might order imagining tests, particularly if another injury (brain or spinal injury) is suspected:

 • X-rays are the first your doctor will turn to. But if these cannot tell whether your neck pain is connected to a generative disease or another injury, specialised imaging tests are required
 • CT (computerised tomography) scans – more detailed pictures of the soft and bone tissues are shown on the monitor
 • MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scans – the area in question is perfectly rendered on the monitor due to the strong magnetic field radio waves that characterise this type of examination

Treatment

The treatment options for this condition can vary from a simple ice pack to numerous physical therapy sessions, depending on the injury’s severity. Your doctor decides which type of treatment you would follow based on the diagnosis. So, expect one (or more) of the likes:

Pain management

There are several pain management options for whiplash. Some of the most common include OTC pain medications such as aspirin and acetaminophen (Tylenol) and pain relief medications such as naproxen (Naprosyn, Aleve) or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin). Your doctor might also advise you to take muscle relaxants to soothe pain and loosen tight muscles. In some cases, these are not enough or perhaps not suitable, so you may also be given a shot of lidocaine or corticosteroid into the painful muscle areas to relieve muscle spasms.

If you face ongoing pain as a result of a car accident and it was proven that another driver’s negligence caused it, we advise you to claim compensation for your injury. This might not stop the pain, but it would help with the costs of medications or other prescribed treatment options.

Exercise

A healthcare professional can also prescribe a series of movement and stretching exercises to gradually restore your neck’s range of motion and speed up recovery. Some common exercises involve:

 • rolling your shoulders
 • bending your neck toward your chest
 • leaning your head side to side
 • rotating your neck in both directions

Along with these exercises, you may also be recommended to work on your posture. A good upright posture can prevent your neck damage from becoming more severe. As for sleeping time, consider using a firm pillow that supports neck relaxation.

Physical therapy

Physical therapy is one of the best treatment options for whiplash and also for a range of injuries that might result from an accident. That is because a physical therapist uses various methods to alleviate pain and loosen tight muscles. Transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TENS) is considered one of the most successful in treating this kind of injuries, but ultrasound or ice/heat can also be used, depending on your needs.

Alternative aftercare

Besides these aforementioned treatment options, there is also a range of alternative remedies you may be recommended to try:

 • acupuncture
 • massage
 • chiropractic care

Wrapping up

The best recommendation to follow when suffering from whiplash is to see a doctor to receive a correct diagnosis and proceed with the treatment. It is also important to be patient – the condition can last anywhere from a week to a month. But it will not last forever!

The post Recovering after a car accident: all you need to know appeared first on Australian Times News.

]]>
Regardless of their complexity, car accidents are traumatic events that result in mental and physical suffering. More often than not, victims suffer severe injuries that make it difficult to adjust to life. While wanting to get back to your routine is normal, keep in mind that car accident recovery takes time. How long? That question is hard to answer, as the healing process looks different for everyone depending on their injuries.

After a car accident, you should seek medical help immediately – even if you don’t believe you’re injured, a doctor will examine you to ensure you don’t have any internal injuries. Then, they will give you recommendations on what you should and shouldn’t do to recover faster, such as seeing a chiropractor, getting enough rest, and staying hydrated. If you’re having difficulty coping with the emotions following the car crash, consider reaching out to a mental health professional. Also, if the car accident happened due to another driver’s negligence, you’re entitled to claim compensation for the damage you’ve suffered – you can learn more about it by visiting https://www.howmuchcompensation.co.uk/.

Sticking to a routine to speed up the healing process

If you tell a parent to skip their child’s night time routine, they’ll immediately say doing that is the equivalent of disaster. Nearly everyone understands that children need a routine to thrive, but why is this rule never applied in adult life? After all, healthy habits are vital regardless of your age. Creating a routine is imperative for recovering after a traumatic event like a car accident, as it can help you heal faster and even increase your body’s strength. Adhering to your doctor’s recommendations is crucial to avoid chronic pain and illness.

Here’s a list of the things that can contribute to a faster recovery.

Eat nutritious meals

The importance of nutrition in recovery is often overlooked; however, a healthy diet is crucial in optimising the healing process, as research shows. After physical trauma, your body needs high-quality proteins to recover, including meat, fish, dairy and eggs. You may need specific foods depending on the injuries sustained. For instance, muscle injuries require creatine and zinc, as the former can restore muscle mass. These nutrients are found in fish, nuts, poultry, whole grains, and seeds. For broken bones, magnesium, vitamin K, calcium and silicon are necessary, and you can find these vitamins either in supplements or in legumes, carrots, whole grains and nuts. If you have soft tissue injuries, your body needs Vitamin C, which you can find in vegetables and fruits. This nutrient is crucial for forming collagen, which will help your wounds heal. Foods rich in vitamin C include:

 • Kiwi;
 • Berries;
 • Bell peppers (orange, red and yellow);
 • Tomatoes;
 • Citrus fruits like grapefruits, lemons and oranges.

Drink enough fluids

The human body is made of 60% water, and staying hydrated is crucial for your body’s natural healing process. If you don’t drink enough fluids, you’ll start to feel sick and exhausted. After suffering an injury, your body is flooded with inflammatory cells, which at some point, can cause pain and discomfort. This is why it’s imperative to hydrate properly so that inflammation flushes out quickly and the pain reduces. Medical experts recommend calculating your fluid intake according to your weight. More precisely, the goal is to drink between half an ounce and an ounce of water per pound. Put differently, you should divide your weight in half and then aim to consume just as many ounces of water every day. Suppose you weigh 150 pounds; in that case, you should drink 75 ounces of water daily, which is the equivalent of nine cups.

Stay active

In the aftermath of an accident, your body experiences significant trauma: your endocrine system sends a rush of adrenaline into your bloodstream, leading to an increased heartbeat and temporarily causing your stamina to increase. While the adrenaline rush is a normal reaction to a car crash, prolonged exposure to it can damage your blood vessels and heart, and you can start feeling exhausted and experience high blood pressure. A vehicle collision can result in damaged tissues, crushed ribs and broken bones, and after suffering such injuries, you may think that the best thing you can do is rest as much as possible. But that can help only to an extent. Studies suggest that too much rest doesn’t help you heal faster.

On the contrary, it makes rehabilitation much more difficult, especially if you suffered injuries to your bones, muscles and soft tissues. Generally, doctors recommend resting for at least 48 hours after a vehicle collision. Then, they may suggest some simple stretches and exercises, depending on your injuries’ severity. In fact, stretching is among the best forms of physical activity, and during the recovery process, it helps rebuild new tissues and reduces scarring. Moreover, it alleviates pain, restoring flexibility and strength. Some simple stretches you can try include downward dog, forward bend, shoulder rolls, and neck extension.

Take care of your mental health

After a car crash, you aren’t only left with physical injuries. There are also the less visible effects that follow a traumatic experience like the one you’ve suffered. While taking care of your physical injuries is a priority, you shouldn’t neglect your mental health either. If you don’t address your feelings, things can quickly get out of control, and the problem can become much bigger, making things worse. You may like you should ‘get over it’, but it’s crucial to process your emotions, whether guilt, anger, or sadness. That way, you’ll begin healing emotionally, too, not only physically.

Besides reaching out to a therapist, there are some things you can do on your own to heal:

 • Start journaling. Writing can help you manage difficult emotions. Instead of dwelling on the experience, you can get it all out on paper, and as you do so, you’ll slowly start accepting your experience and healing.
 • Seek support from loved ones. Recovering from a car accident can be tough, and you shouldn’t go through it alone. Talking to your family members or friends about what happened and how you feel will be of great help.
 • Practice mindfulness. The period after an accident can be incredibly difficult, and it’s normal to experience a lot of anxiety. Mindfulness can help you cope with it as you learn to focus on your breathing and accept your emotions as they happen.

The bottom line

Recovering after a car accident is challenging, but you must be patient and take care of yourself during this time. Over time, as you focus on your physical and emotional healing, you’ll slowly be able to readjust to life.

The Connection Between Physical and Mental Health https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/health-wellness/learn-more-about-the-connection-between-physical-and-mental-health-january-2023/ Wed, 01 Feb 2023 19:55:05 +0000 https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/?p=2456552 Physical and mental health are connected in several ways. Physical diseases directly impact mental health, especially chronic illnesses.

The post The Connection Between Physical and Mental Health appeared first on Australian Times News.

]]>
Dealing with chronic illness or recovering from an accident can be debilitating, physically and mentally. Most people think about the physical toll illness, or an accident has on your body and neglect the emotional and psychological stress it could trigger. Physical health issues often make it challenging to enjoy your daily activities and could rob you of a sense of hope.

Suffering an accident or being diagnosed with a chronic illness can cause long-lasting negative feelings, from resentment to guilt, fear, and exhaustion because of the associated consequences. Feelings of sadness and frustration are also quite common because you cannot accept the idea that your life is different.

Medical experts state that having a complex health issue makes you more likely to also deal with mental health problems. Statistics show that people having diabetes are two to three times more likely to get depressed than people without the condition. If you leave your mental health issues unchecked, they can make your physical condition worse.

How are physical and mental health issues connected?

Physical and mental health are connected in several ways. Physical diseases directly impact mental health, especially chronic illnesses that cause changes in the brain. The symptoms associated with health issues often have a direct role in triggering depression. For example, anxiety and depression are thought to be part of multiple sclerosis, not conditions resulting from the challenging circumstances patients experience.

People dealing with physical health issues are also prone to mental health conditions due to the lifestyle changes they experience.

For example, if they experience an accident and are confined to their house during recovery, they can no longer go to work, engage in normal daily activities, or stay connected to their loved ones. The change in everyday activities can cause mental health symptoms.

In addition, the medications used to treat some physical conditions can have mental health side effects.

Can your mental health affect your physical health?

As mentioned before, physical conditions can increase the risk of suffering from mental health issues and vice versa. Studies show that patients already dealing with mental health are more likely to worsen their physical disease symptoms

Why does this happen?

Genetics – your genes can make it more likely to develop mental conditions, which could later play a negative role in dealing with physical health.

Lack of support – suppose you have unhealthy behaviour or addiction, you’ll find it more challenging to change your life when you lack support. Healthcare professionals believe that patients who don’t benefit from their loved ones’ support are less likely to give up on unhealthy habits like drinking or smoking. If you also deal with accident injuries or chronic illness, your unhealthy behaviours could prevent you from recovering properly.

Low motivation – some medications or mental health problems impact your motivation and energy, and you fail to take care of yourself as you’re supposed to when recovering from physical health issues.

You don’t receive the necessary medical help – sometimes, the medical experts fail to identify the cause of your physical symptoms and therefore don’t investigate them, believing they’re part of your mental illness.

Besides, a series of mental health issues come with physical symptoms because your mind and body aren’t separate. It’s surprising how much a mental health issue can affect your body. For example, depression is often associated with digestive problems, fatigue, and headaches.

What’s it like to live with a complex physical health issue?

Dealing with the injuries resulting from an accident or chronic illness can be overwhelming. In addition, if someone else is at fault for your accident, you might be frustrated and angry. Understandably, you feel this way, and maybe the only way to feel better is to get compensation for your injuries. As an accident victim, you’re entitled to claim compensation for accident injuries from the one at fault.

Failing to treat your physical condition or mental health illness caused by the physical symptoms can be draining for both you and your loved ones. Dealing with a complex health issue is a full-time effort and requires great effort to handle your daily routine and life.

Depending on the extent of the condition you might have to make changes to your daily lifestyle which could overwhelm you. Before getting injured or being diagnosed, your life offered you the chance to enjoy several activities. But since you were diagnosed, you deal with both physical and mental symptoms, which require acceptance and understanding.

How can you improve your overall health when suffering from a complex health issue?

Forging a new life when being sick can be challenging. And it’s normal to feel sad and afraid while you make sense of what’s happening. But as you slowly start taking steps towards recovery, your mental health improves.

Most chronic health issues require a lot of self-care, and if your mental health is down, it can be difficult to do it. You might feel like you cannot control how you care for yourself. But once you become aware of the steps you must make to improve your overall health, you’ll find the process isn’t as daunting as you expect it to be.

Here are some ways to optimise your health.

– Eat healthily. Not skipping meals is important because your body needs nutrients to recover. Your meals enable you to manage your moods and blood sugar, so pay close attention to what’s on your plate.

– Rest. Get at least 7 hours of sleep daily because a good night’s rest lowers the amount of stress put on your body and allows it to recover.

– Be more active. If your health allows it, try walking around the block, playing with your children or pet, or doing anything involving movement. Discuss with your healthcare provider the physical activities you could engage in without worsening your condition.

– Get support. Talking with your loved ones about how you feel and getting support can make you feel better.

A chronic illness is excruciating, but remember that you’re not alone. You can benefit from help to improve your state and recover your health.

The post Hair Straighteners: How Toxic Chemicals May be Causing Uterine Cancer appeared first on Australian Times News.

]]>
Hair straighteners, also known as flat irons or hair irons, have become a staple in many people’s hair styling routines. These devices use heat to straighten and smooth out hair, creating a sleek and polished look.

However, recent research has raised concerns about the potential health risks associated with the use of hair straighteners, particularly in regard to uterine cancer.

Toxic Chemicals in Hair Straighteners

Hair straighteners often contain a variety of chemicals that may be harmful to our health. One of the main ingredients in hair straighteners is formaldehyde, a known carcinogen that has been linked to uterine cancer. Formaldehyde is used in hair straighteners to help straighten hair and make it more manageable.

Other chemicals that may be found in hair straighteners include phthalates and parabens. Phthalates are a group of chemicals that are used to make plastics more flexible and are often found in personal care products, such as hair straighteners. These chemicals have been shown to disrupt the endocrine system and have been linked to a variety of health problems, including reproductive issues and cancer.

How Hair Straighteners May Cause Uterine Cancer

The use of hair straighteners may increase the risk of uterine cancer in a few different ways. One possible mechanism is through the release of formaldehyde and other toxic chemicals into the air when the flat iron is heated. These chemicals can be inhaled and absorbed into the body, potentially increasing cancer risk.

Another possible mechanism is through the direct application of hair straighteners to the skin. When flat iron is used on the skin, it can release toxins that can be absorbed into the bloodstream. This may be especially concerning for women who use hair straighteners on their genital area, as this area is close to the uterus.

The heat produced by hair straighteners may also contribute to the risk of uterine cancer. High heat exposure has been linked to an increased risk of cancer, and hair straighteners can reach temperatures of up to 450 degrees Fahrenheit. This intense heat may damage the DNA in cells, leading to cancer development.

Litigation against hair relaxers

In recent years, there have been several hair relaxer lawsuits filed against manufacturers of these products due to their potential link to uterine cancer and other health problems. Some of these lawsuits have resulted in settlements for the plaintiffs, while others are still ongoing.

It is important for consumers to be aware of the potential risks associated with the use of hair relaxers and to consider safer alternatives when styling their hair.

Preventing Exposure to Toxic Chemicals

There are a few steps that you can take to reduce your exposure to the toxic chemicals found in hair straighteners:

 1. Choose hair straighteners that are free of formaldehyde and other harmful chemicals. Look for hair straighteners that are labeled “formaldehyde-free” or that use natural ingredients instead of synthetic chemicals.
 2. Use hair straighteners sparingly. The more frequently you use hair straighteners, the more exposure you will have to the chemicals they contain. Try to use hair straighteners only occasionally, or opt for other hair styling methods when possible.
 3. Use a heat protectant spray before using hair straighteners. This can help to reduce the amount of heat that your hair is exposed to, reducing the risk of heat-related damage.
 4. Avoid inhaling the steam produced by hair straighteners. This steam can contain formaldehyde and other toxic chemicals that can be harmful if inhaled.
 5. Use hair straighteners in a well-ventilated area. This can help to reduce your exposure to the chemicals that are released into the air when the flat iron is heated.

Conclusion

While hair straighteners can give us the smooth and straight hair that we desire, it is important to be aware of the potential health risks associated with their use. The chemicals found in hair straighteners, such as formaldehyde and phthalates, may increase the risk of uterine cancer and other health problems. It is important to use caution when using these devices and to consider alternative hair styling methods that may be less harmful to our health.

Men tend to ignore symptoms and not visit a doctor regularly for preventive examinations. However, it can adversely affect men health. Since it is directly related to male fertility and health as men age, we present some helpful tips that will help you improve your health.

Visit the doctor regularly

Regular check-ups are essential. Monitor your weight, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels. High blood pressure and high cholesterol are prerequisites for cardiovascular disease.

It is crucial to have your prostate checked. Prostate cancer is one of the most common diseases among men worldwide. If you have difficulty urinating – pain or blood in the urine, there is probably some infection in the prostate.

Another thing that is essential to get screened for is colon cancer. That is another common disease among men. Doctors recommend that men who are over the age of 50 get regular check-ups for polyps and other changes that are a risk.

During the check-up, your doctor will perform a physical examination and prescribe blood tests to check your health condition. Another thing he will want to know is your medical history and whether there are any cases of prostate cancer, colon cancer, or other diseases in your family.

And last but not least, if you and your partner are trying to conceive a child but have been having difficulty for more than a year, you should visit a reproductive specialist who will prescribe a spermogram. It checks the quality and quantity of sperm and whether they are suitable for fertilization.

Eat a balanced diet

Healthy food is the key to male health. Processed foods that contain large amounts of sugar, salt, unhealthy fats, and artificial additives are highly harmful to a man’s fertility and health.

It is essential to try to eat healthily. Focus on the vitamin- and mineral-rich foods:

 • Fresh fruit and vegetables
 • Whole grains
 • Fibre-rich foods such as beans and leafy green vegetables
 • Meat
 • Fish

We advise you to avoid smoking and drinking alcohol. It adversely affects male health, causing infertility.

Do sports regularly

Regular exercise is essential for men’s health. Doing so will protect you from heart disease, help you maintain a normal weight, and improve your overall physical and emotional well-being.

Try to combine different physical activities – long walks, swimming, cardio, fitness, tennis, jogging, and many more. Weight lifting and yoga also have a beneficial effect on your health.

Maintain a healthy weight

Being overweight is one of the leading causes of heart, lung, and blood diseases. Maintaining an average weight is extremely important for your health. One of the ways to deal with excess weight involves the help of a balanced diet and regular exercise.

Drastic diets, fasting, and excessive exercise can worsen your health instead of helping you, so it is recommended to be patient and persistent.

Take vitamins and minerals

Vitamins and minerals are vital for the proper functioning of the human body. You can get them through food, such as fruits, vegetables, fish, and meat.

However, we don’t always get all the essential micro and macronutrients through food. That is why it is recommended to take them as a supplement.

Some supplements that improve male health are omega-3 and vitamin D. If you are taking supplements, it is good to take a break for a certain period of time.

Before you take any multivitamins or supplements, we recommend visiting your doctor to discuss the benefits and risks of their intake.

The Bottom Line

It is essential for men to pay attention to and care for their health. Try to lead a healthy and balanced lifestyle, minimize stress and take care of your mental health. And if you have any symptoms of a health problem, visit a doctor.

STI’s (Sexually Transmitted infections) and STD’s (Sexually Transmitted Diseases) are the biggest problems that can face young and sexually active adults. An STI can be spread by any type of unprotected intercourse, and sadly most of them are asymptomatic. So most young adults, unless they are being tested for them, are spreading them around to their partner(s). Since most of them are incurable, this can also be a problem.

STD’s can also be spread via any type of unprotected intercourse, and they are also common and don’t have a lot of symptoms. While it might seem like an STI and an STD can be used interchangeably, they actually are different. One is a disease and the other is an infection, although one can cause the other, as an infection inside the body can progress into a disease.

The CDC estimates that back in 2018, almost half of the 26 million new cases of sexually transmitted infections were from youth that were between 15-24 years of age. Since most young adults don’t get tested after having sex or inquire if their partner has any STD’s, there are probably more cases that don’t get treated as well.

In order to protect yourself from both STD’s and STI’s, getting tested regularly, having conversations with your partner about their own sexual health, and protecting yourself during sex with the use of condoms can be very helpful to keep everything healthy. Addtiionally, if you find yourself with an STI or STD, then there’s medication available that can cure the disease or at least make the symptoms mangable, such as aciclovir tablets for herpes in young adults.

The Age That People Are Starting To Become Sexually Active

By the time most teenagers turn 18 and have to deal with the raging hormones, they will have had at least some type of sexual experience. However, back in 2017, the data showed that the median age for having sex (vaginal, anal, or oral intercourse) was 16 years old, with 75% of youth having vaginal, anal, or oral intercoure by age 19.

The Use Of Protection

Regardless of the age or the type of intercourse, what really matters is how protected the youth are. Proper protection stops unwanted pregnancy, prevents STD’s and STI’s from being transmitted, and also allows both parties to feel comfortable around one another. In 2019, however, it was shown that the condom use for sexually active high school students was around 54%, although those doing intercourse for the first time had statistics of 78% for males and 89% for females.

Additionally, most females use birth control, and according to the 2015-2017 NSFG (National Survey of Family Growth), teen women aged 15-19 used either a condom (93%), pulling out or withdrawal (65%) and the pill (53%). Additionally 31% of teen women from 15-17 used contraceptive services from publicly funded clinics.

How Can We Help Young Adults With This Data?

The data is showing that young adults are having more sex, younger, while also using less protection and also getting at risk for more STIs and STDs. In order to keep young adults safe, we need to focus on teaching them about how to have sex with a partner safely. This can include choosing the right partner who shares your values, proper usage of protection and what protection options are the best for preventing problems and unwanted pregnancies.

By making sure that young adults know how to keep themselves safe when having sex, and also removing the stigma around STIs and STDs, and giving them opportunities to get tested without shame or worry, then everyone can have a happy and healthy time with their sexual lives.

Understanding the statistics of the sexual health of young adults might be a bit awkward to think about, but the more the data is understood and analyzed, the more the young adults can be guided into their hormones and their feelings for whatever gender they are attracted too.

Since stress is one of the key job-related elements affecting one’s mental health, all companies in NSW are obligated by work health and safety rules to limit the presence of stressors for their workers. If stress caused a physical or mental injury, you can be eligible for:

 • weekly wages
 • medical expenses
 • lump sum payment
 • domestic assistance
 • common law pay-out

What may you claim as compensation for working stress?

You can be eligible to weekly benefits and medical expenses for your losses if you suffer a stress injury at work. You may also claim a lump sum pay-out if your accident results in a 15% or greater whole-person disability. The severity of your injuries will determine how much compensation you receive.

What to do if you have been injured due to stress and this is affecting your profession?

Due to an illness or accident that has prevented you from returning to work, you may make a total and permanent disability (TPD) claim against your superannuation fund. If they hinder you from working in your typical employment, psychological/mental diseases and aids are covered under TPD claims for depression just like physical ones.

Do you eligible for compensation for stress at work?

Under NSW’s workers compensation programme, stress is not considered as a separate injury. However, increased stress might result in a psychological condition that could be considered an injury for which you could make a claim for compensation.

A diagnostic injury from your doctor is necessary to demonstrate your stress-related psychological injury. You can identify and demonstrate your circumstance as a psychological injury that eligible for compensation with the aid of a doctor’s evaluation through the Certificate of Capacity.

However, you must also be able to demonstrate that your stress-related ailment was brought on by your job. This may be a difficult procedure that may call for a comprehensive diagnostic and legal counsel from a psychological injury workers compensation.

How can you make a claim for work-related stress?

Within six months after the date of the injury, compensation claims for both physical and psychological work-related injuries must be made. The time restriction for making a workers’ compensation claim may be increased in specific unique circumstances by up to three years.

It is crucial that you report your injury to your employer or insurance as soon as you become aware of it. The next step is to discuss your issue with a physician or general practitioner and obtain a “Certificate of Capacity.” This certificate will serve as the official medical record of your stress-related injury and your consequent incapacity to work. To receive your earnings and medical costs, travel charges, and lump sum benefits, you must lastly fill out and deliver a work injury claim form to the employer or insurance directly.

There are eight major risk factors that contribute to stress at work:

According to SafeWork Australia, there are eight major risk factors that can lead to stress at work:

 • Work demands like strict deadlines,
 • Monotonous or dull tasks,
 • Working long hours and emotionally demanding assignments,
 • Low levels of control,
 • Poor support from supervisors and co-workers,
 • Lack of role clarity, poorly managed relationships,
 • Low levels of recognition and reward,
 • Poorly managed change and problems with organisational justice.

Employers are counselled to use stress-reduction strategies such as routine performance reviews, fostering a positive workplace environment, and teaching staff how to handle stress on their own.

For workers, ongoing stress can cause a variety of physical, mental, emotional, and behavioural issues, from headaches and fatigue to rage and anxiety to poor job performance. Organisations are cautioned by SafeWork Australia that excessive employee stress levels can lead to poorer productivity, dissatisfied customers, more frequent workplace confrontations, and an increase in sick days.

Hair Loss Treatments in Australia https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/health-wellness/hair-loss-treatments-in-australia%ef%bf%bc/ Tue, 24 May 2022 09:53:00 +0000 https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/?p=2455073 Hair loss could either be temporary or chronic and significantly impact both your head and the rest of your body. It could be caused by inheritance, hormone imbalances, health issues, or simply aging. Hair loss can affect everyone, but it is more frequent among males.

Baldness is a term that describes significant hair loss from the head. The most prevalent reason for baldness is genetic hair loss as people become older. Some people may rather leave this issue untreated and unnoticed. While the others can hide it behind their hair with cosmetics, caps, or shawls. On the contrary, some choose to undergo one among the many therapies offered to stop future hair loss or to boost hair restoration.

Luckily, Hair and skin science Gold Coast offer you the best hair treatments in Australia!

Types of Hair Loss Treatments You Can Get

PRF Hair Loss Treatments

Are you worried about the increase in your hair fall? PRF hair loss treatments are a newly produced procedure that is more advanced than PRP. It works on the same concepts as PRP, in that blood is taken and separated in a centrifuge.

Instead of using anticoagulants, an insoluble protein called fibrin is filled with platelets and is carefully isolated from stem cells and your leukocytes and placed inside a fibrin matrix. Fibrin still has growth hormones, but it also has more functional enzymes, which means it’s a more successful therapy. This procedure appears and feels similar to a PRP hair loss therapy, but it definitely has a more significant impact.

PRP Hair Loss Treatment

Hair loss medication using our PRP is a non-surgical, effective solution for baldness and other typical disorders. It targets problem spots with platelet-rich plasma obtained from your blood to assist in the increase of hair growth.

Growth hormones found in platelet-rich plasma aid in the formation of new tissues. We can boost healthy hair renewal by employing it on your scalp to treat prevalent disorders.

You can use PRP hair loss treatments alone or a combination of a larger therapeutic plan to address one or more hair issues.

The Process Behind PRP Hairloss Treatment

Before starting the PRP hair restoration procedure, a little blood sample is collected from you. A centrifuge is then used to separate the different substances in the blood. By utilizing an exceedingly small needle, the micro-needling process will now commence wherein the platelet-rich plasma is extracted and infused into your scalp.

The microscopic injections are carefully placed by cosmetic surgeons into balding spots or locations wherein hair thinning is evident. These injections will establish a connection with your follicles’ roots, which could stimulate growth. This process also utilizes a method termed micro-needling your scalp, which could assist in promoting hair follicles by increasing blood circulation.

How to protect and maintain your restored hair

In some uncommon cases, your scalp could feel uncomfortable after the treatment, but most individuals do not suffer any irritation. You could instantly resume your normal routine. Simply avoid shampooing your hair or engaging in heavy activities for 12 hours following the session.

To attain the best outcomes, therapies should be repeated after 2-3 weeks for a maximum of 12 times. Depending on your scalp’s condition, a follow-up therapy may be necessary after three months.

Who can undergo this treatment?

For men who suffer from premature balding, PRP hair loss therapy may be a non-surgical solution. Hair thinning in men is the most frequent source of male hair loss. PRP hair restoration treatment can help you and those who have other disorders that lead to hair loss.

However, this doesn’t imply that hair loss is only applicable to men. In fact, By the age of 50, almost 40% of women will have experienced baldness and hair thinning. It normally begins at the portion line in women, and sparse regions at the forehead may occur. It could occur in numerous women after pregnancy or during their postmenopausal period.

Nevertheless, the problem isn’t usually caused by hormones. Infections, drugs, disorders, and external conditions can cause hair follicles to cease functioning properly. Hair loss can be caused by emotional stress as well. Women suffering from hair loss problems may benefit from PRP injections and micro-needling.

Thus, here’s a list of potential candidates for this treatment:

 • Hereditary hair loss
 • Diseases such as alopecia
 • Stress-induced hair loss

Conclusion

Your hair is one of the essential factors in establishing confidence when presenting yourself. Having strong hair also shows that your health is in good condition. So, if you are experiencing problems involving this, you can immediately consult specialists to address this concern.

Buruli ulcer: Health authorities warn of flesh-eating disease https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/health-wellness/flesh-eating-disease-buruli-ulcer/ Thu, 05 May 2022 12:10:44 +0000 https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/?p=2454854 The Health sector has brought attention to a flesh eating disease called Buruli ulcers making its rounds in the Melbourne metro recently.

The post Buruli ulcer: Health authorities warn of flesh-eating disease appeared first on Australian Times News.

]]>
Buruli ulcer, otherwise known as the flesh-eating disease has been seen in multiple individuals so far. This disease has first sought to be in the coastal areas but has now become more prominent.

39 people have been treated with the Buruli ulcer

Right now, health authorities are still investigating the transfer of this disease from the wildlife onto humans. So far, experts believe that the Buruli ulcer is transferred from mosquitos.

Thus far, the disease or infection is a wound that takes a very long time to heal and will even grow bigger as time goes by. According to 9News, 39 people in Melbourne’s metro have been treated with the Buruli ulcer.

“The ulcer can enlarge over weeks and months.. and they can take months to heal,”

Deborah Friedman

Transfer of ulcers is being investigated

In the meantime, health authorities are urging the public to remain calm but encourage that they do consult a doctor if they do have an open wound that isn’t healing.

When infected with Buruli ulcers, the bacterium will make its way under the skin before eventually secreting a toxin that kills the skin.

Scientists believe that infection stems from mosquitos and possums. But this is still being investigated right now. Generally, the spot will look like a mosquito bite and then proceed to grow bigger.

To prevent possible infection with the Buruli ulcer, the public is urged to cover up while working. This will reduce any contact with open wounds in which water can splash over them.

Australia’s fight against addiction https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/health-wellness/australias-fight-against-addiction/ Tue, 15 Mar 2022 16:30:38 +0000 https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/?p=2454411 Findings by Health direct Australia show that one in every 20 Australians suffers from an addiction problem.

The post Australia’s fight against addiction appeared first on Australian Times News.

]]>
The addiction crisis in Australia has taken a toll on Australian families, threatened public safety, eroded public health, and claimed thousands of lives annually.

Though the government has, over the years, implemented comprehensive measures to curtail the epidemic, Australia is still experiencing the devastating consequences of this powerful enemy. Some Lawmakers believe it’s time for Australia to take a fresh approach.

Efforts to Win the War on Addiction

Addiction has been a persistent concern in Australia. Findings by Healthdirect Australia show that one in every 20 Australians suffers from an addiction problem. Alcohol and tobacco dependence top the list of the substances fueling the addiction situation in the country.

A higher percentage of Australians are also indulging in cannabis, which is currently the most abused illicit substance across the country. Abuse of amphetamines, hallucinogens, cocaine, ecstasy, opioid-based drugs amongst Australians is growing at an unprecedented speed.

These alarming statistics give a snapshot of how serious addiction is in Australia:

 • Australians spend approximately is worth $11.3 billion each year on illegal drugs
 • Between 2015 and 2020, Australia’s highest rates of drug-related ambulance emergencies were linked to alcohol intoxication
 • Overall, prescription drugs account for close to 69% of drug-related deaths in Australia
 • According to a 2021 report on Australia’s overdose deaths, over 2,000 Australians die annually from overdosing on stimulants, opioids, and multiple illicit substances (simultaneously).
 • Australia spends almost $1.5 billion every year on drug law enforcement

The addiction situation in Australia is almost similar to England’s in terms of severity. Research shows that abuse of cannabis, powder cocaine, opioids, benzodiazepines, Ketamine, and Ecstacy is at the highest record in England.

Alcoholism is also a significant problem in England — over 600,000 people suffer from alcohol dependence, and only 18% are in the treatment. In 2020 alone, the rate of alcohol-related deaths was at 13% per 100,000 people. Drug-related deaths in England are currently at the highest levels.

The state of addiction in Australia continues to threaten the nation’s economy. Addiction is to blame for the rising incidences of ill health and premature deaths in Australia, which in turn result in massive productivity losses.

The country is grappling with increased health care costs arising from the large number of Australians in need of addiction treatment.

Mass incarceration of drug offenders is placing a heavy burden on Australia’s state budget, as the costs of housing prisoners in state correctional facilities are increasingly high. Criminal justice expenses have gone up since more funds are being directed towards facilitating criminal investigations and prosecutions on drug-related crimes.

Where the Focus Is On

The economic and public health consequences of addiction have prompted the Australian law enforcement authorities and intelligence agencies to remain relentless in enforcing drug crackdowns, with the aim of disrupting street gangs involved in selling illicit drugs and putting drug kingpins behind bars.

The major goal of this strategy is to significantly reduce the steady supply and easy accessibility of illegal drugs to vulnerable Australian populations.

Meanwhile, a section of parliamentarians, led by MP Fiona Patten, are pushing for the decriminalisation of illicit drug users, citing policies on arresting users found in possession of small amounts of illegal drugs for personal use have made little difference in reducing substance use and drug-related fatalities.

This group of lawmakers wants the Australian government to rethink its approach in tackling illicit substance use, emphasising that jailing addicted drug users is no longer an effective response to Australia’s worrying addiction problem.

The government has, however, maintained that the authorities’ response to addiction-fueled crime (e.g. possession of a small quantity of an illegal drug) isn’t entirely tied to a criminal justice-driven approach (e.g. immediate arrests and prosecutions).

The idea of approaching Australia’s addiction as a public health concern, as opposed to a crime and punishment issue, is evident in Australia’s harm-minimisation strategy, particularly its drug diversion approach to drug offences.

Instead of issuing arrests and criminal charges to minor, first-time drug–crime offenders, authorities connect these individuals with addiction treatment and recovery support services.

The Australian government is focused mainly on treating the country’s problematic drug use situation as a health problem, not a legal one. By prioritising harm-reduction interventions such as drug diversions, the government remains optimistic that it will make great strides in interrupting the cycle of addiction and drug-related crime.

Ending The World’s Greatest Public Health Challenge

The world has spent billions of dollars enforcing its drug abuse prevention and response policies. Still, the war against addiction is yet to pay off, with some policymakers urging governments to rethink alternative approaches to fighting addiction.

The fact remains, though — ensuring that more drug-dependent individuals are receiving the best treatment for addiction is the ultimate solution to a nation’s addiction tragedy.

Dental Care in Australia: An essential investment in good health https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/health-wellness/dental-care-in-australia-an-essential-investment-in-good-health/ Mon, 31 Jan 2022 16:40:11 +0000 https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/?p=2454052 This article will consider some of the reasons why adequate oral care can translate into an essential investment in good health and overall wellbeing. Read on to discover more exciting information.

The post Dental Care in Australia: An essential investment in good health appeared first on Australian Times News.

]]>
There is no doubt that Australia is not a cheap place to live in, as the average weekly expenditure in the country is currently at around $2,200 for a household. This is little wonder it has been ranked as the country with the 16th highest cost of living worldwide. It even gets more serious when you put this factor into perspective with health and dental care in the country. Reports reveal that the cost for prescription drugs in Australia is almost four times more than what is obtainable in the global benchmark for such commodities.

Further study reports from the Australian Institute for Health and Welfare (AIHW) show that:

 • More than half the population of residents in Australia who do not have dental health care insurance are shipping or delaying dental treatment because of its cost.
 • A quarter of the total people (12.3 million) covered by dental insurance have also skipped or delayed an appointment with their dentist because of the extra out-of-pocket cost they will incur.
 • About 58% of the people who schedule appointments with dentists in Australia do this because of an already developed dental problem. Only about 27% of these people visit the dentist for check-ups.
 • About 39% (4 in every 10) of people aged 15 and above postpone or avoid scheduling a dentist appointment because of the cost involved.

All the above-listed figures point to one thing, and it is the fact that there is a need for some dental intervention in Australia. This could be either in the form of dental awareness creation, monetary and resource investments, etc. This is why professionals like the cosmetic dentist, Dr. Salem, advocate for more investment into health and dental care in Australia.

Top Reasons Why Dental Care is an Essential Investment in Good Health

If you are putting some money and effort into caring for your teeth, it will help to know that you are not just spending on your dental health. Instead, you are also investing in your overall health and general wellbeing. Here are some of the reasons why it is so:

Good dental health helps you to avoid cardiovascular diseases: research results over the years have shown that your oral hygiene and care can help to prevent cardiovascular disease, like clogged arteries, heart diseases, stroke, etc. This is because they can be linked to the infections and inflammation caused by oral bacteria when you do not adequately care for your mouth.

Good dental health can help to prevent pneumonia: it has been reported that some bacteria from your mouth can get into your lungs to cause pneumonia and other respiratory issues if you do not care for your teeth. This means that proper oral care can help you avoid such situations.

Good dental health can help boost your self-confidence: imagine walking into a space filled with people and not being able to smile or talk as freely as you would wish to because you are ashamed of certain defects in your teeth. This is often the case for people who do not ensure proper care for their teeth. On the other hand, caring for your teeth will give you the best set of teeth and smile, such that you can confidently walk into any public setting and not be afraid to smile.

Pregnancy and birth complications: reports have also revealed that dental issues like periodontitis can cause low birth weight and premature birth for pregnant women. This means that you must care for your teeth if you wish to avoid such situations as an expectant mother.

How to care for your oral health

The best dental investment you can make today is to ensure adequate care for your oral health. Here are some tips to help you:

– Ensure to brush your teeth with a soft-bristled brush at least two times daily.

– Use fluoride-based toothpaste for brushing your teeth.

– Ensure to floss once every day.

– Change your toothbrush at least once every four months, or anytime you notice that the bristles are beginning to wear.

– Reduce your intake of sugar and sugary foods

– Schedule an appointment with your dentist from time to time.

Conclusion

Dental care is an essential investment that could pay off in every aspect of your health and wellbeing. This article has considered why you should invest in your teeth today.

Working ways of Rehab Clinics

The intake phase of addiction treatment is often the most intensive and can take up to a week. It consists of an evaluation process, which will be used to create your individualized recovery plan.

You may experience detox symptoms during this phase, such as nausea or vomiting. This unpleasant withdrawal period should last only about five days on average before you move on to rehabilitation and aftercare for ongoing recovery from substance abuse disorder.

Addiction is a complex disease, but there are many treatment options available to help you get back on the path of recovery.

Clients with substance abuse issues can receive individualized treatment in a rehab program. If you’re considering getting sober and want more information about what to expect from different types of programs, check out these details.

Phase 1

The first phase of a customized care plan is to educate the patient on how addiction works and what they need to do once treatment begins.

This will help them understand their triggers and teach them about relapse prevention strategies that can be used when the temptation arises again in the future.

In this way, it becomes easier for patients to make informed decisions before transitioning out of rehab. Remembering these tips from cognitive neuroscience might also help you stay focused on your goals during times of great stress or overwhelm.

The type of program you choose should be based on your needs and availability. So, take some time to get acquainted before making your final decision.

Phase 4

The aftercare treatment program is designed to maintain sobriety for an extended period and includes individual therapy sessions and group therapy.

You can avail of these services to get rid of the impacts of addictions. You must explore things properly before you opt for a rehabilitation center.

Personal trainer Norman low has been banned from giving nutritional advice to his clients after it was discovered that he did not have the necessary credentials to do so.

The trainer has since been banned from giving any dietary and nutritional advice after he told his client to stop taking the prescribed medication the client needed to take.

Unsafe and Inappropriate diet plans

The South Australian trainer’s diet plans were found to be unsafe and inappropriate as the plans can have serious nutrient defects which could in effect be detrimental.

Not only can his health advice cause serious health issues but can cause cardiac arrest in which many are not always able to survive.

Associate Professor Grant Davies advises anyone who is still using these plans to stop using them immediately as these plans were not developed by a dietician.

“To protect the public, I have issued this order and I strongly recommend anyone still using these plans to consult an accredited dietitian.”

Professor Grant Davies

Mr Low will still be a personal trainer

From today onwards, personal trainer Norman Low will be permanently banned from claiming he is an accredited dietician and giving health advice that extends past basic healthy eating information.

Mr. Low will still, however, be able to be a personal trainer.

In one of his plans, the trainer instructed the client to have 9 liters of water that can lead to sudden cardiac arrest if followed. He further instructed his client to stop using all oral medications that could also lead to detrimental effects.

These life-threatening plans are but a few of the bizarre instructions the trainer has given to his clients.

Here's what you might be doing wrong.

Sleep is an important factor that determines the way our bodies feel the next day and essentially how our brain functions during the day. Depriving yourself of good sleep will not benefit you in any way.

It might be considered general knowledge to know that good sleep affects your daily routine and how ready your body feels for the next day. There are, however, factors that may prohibit you from getting into a deep sleep.

Implementing a consistent daily routine

Well, for starters, not having a sleep schedule at all can be quite the problem and the obvious reason for the constant fatigue that you might be feeling. At this point, it is surely time to start re-evaluating your day-to-day habits so that your body is able to become used to these routines.

Eventually, your body will become accustomed to the routine you’ve started implementing every day.

Reducing your screen time before sleep

Some other pointers to your disrupted sleep schedule could be that your screen time does not have a limit right before bed. By limiting your screen time an hour before bedtime, the quality of your sleep will be increased as your brain interprets the blue light as the sun which in effect makes it seem as though it is daytime.

By allowing your brain to distinguish the difference between daytime and nighttime, you will be able to have the best sleep rather than feeling like you’ve had a minimum amount of sleep.

Avoid eating right before bed

So, while immense screen time is a no-no, what you consume and when you consume foods is an important part of what determines the type of sleep you will be getting. Avoiding products such as caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol is a good start to obtaining your full night’s rest.

Consuming food a few hours before is probably not the best idea as well. This will determine how your sleep throughout the night as your foods might not altogether be digested yet.

All of these factors contribute to your overall health so remember to be kind to yourself and achieve that deep sleep you so desperately need!

Treatment of Syringomyelia https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/health-wellness/treatment-of-syringomyelia/ Fri, 17 Dec 2021 07:39:53 +0000 https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/?p=2453401 Syringomyelia is a severe, steadily progressive disease of the central nervous system. How can it be treated?

The post Treatment of Syringomyelia appeared first on Australian Times News.

]]>
Syringomyelia develops due to an overgrowth of neuroglia cells, which amount to more than half of the central nervous system and normally participate in many processes including metabolism and regeneration.

How to diagnose syringomyelia?

The most common symptoms are headaches and intermittent pain in the arms or legs, usually more severe in one-half of the trunk. The pain may begin as dull and not intense and gradually increase, or it may appear suddenly, often as a result of coughing or straining.

Pain in the extremities often is present, which tends to become chronic. There may also be numbness and tingling in the arms, chest, or back. Lack of sensibility in the feet, or tingling in the legs and feet, is also noted. Weakness in the limbs in syringomyelia leads to abnormal hand movements or impaired walking. Eventually, the functions of the limbs may be lost.

How is syringomyelia treated?

Diagnosis and treatment for syringomyelia require work of a team of specialists, including neurologists, radiologists, neurosurgeons, and orthopedists.

Treatment usually involves surgery, aimed at slowing down the progression of spinal cord damage and preserving its functions. Surgery for syringomyelia is often performed in the presence of spinal cord compression. In addition, surgical manipulations are performed to correct deformities or to implant shunts. Surgical treatment leads to stabilization or moderate improvement of symptoms in most patients.

Many specialists believe that surgical treatment is only necessary for patients with progressive neurologic symptoms. Delayed surgical treatment can lead to irreversible spinal cord damage and severe persistent neurologic impairment. Statistically, life expectancy of patients with progressive symptoms without surgical treatment ranges from 6 to 12 months.

If surgery can be avoided, medications are prescribed to reduce swelling of the spinal cord and nearby soft tissues. It is often advisable to avoid vigorous physical activity, which may increase venous pressure during drug therapy.

Conservative treatment may involve the following techniques:

 • Radiation therapy
 • Treatment with radioactive iodine and phosphorus
 • Complex intake of medications for targeted dehydration, neuroprotectants, vitamins, analgesics, etc.
 • Physiotherapy, massage, therapeutic gymnastics, balneotherapy

Neurological rehabilitation after syringomyelia treatment

The overall goal of rehabilitation is to maintain spinal cord functions using exercises and adaptive equipment. In the case of syringomyelia in children, interventions often focus on correcting scoliosis. Syringomyelia in children is characterized by much less sensory and functional impairment than in adults, which is more favorable for surgical treatment.

In addition, syringomyelia does not progress equally in all patients. Some patients, usually those with more moderate symptoms, experience stabilization of symptoms within a year.

A frequent complication is the patient’s impairment or loss of some function (up to disability). Despite reports of complete neurological recovery after surgery, most patients manage to achieve stabilization or only moderate improvement.

How to start treatment of syringomyelia during a lockdown?

To go abroad for treatment during the lockdown, you need to prepare medical documents, choose a clinic and physician, and get a medical visa. If you want to save money and exclude unnecessary stress and worries, contact specialists with experience in organising treatment of syringomyelia abroad, who will provide support during the whole period of medical program implementation.

Booking Health can become your companion in the medical journey. All of the above aspects of treatment arrangement can be taken over by Booking Health. The process of visa receiving is perhaps the most confusing part here, since embassies might not be working during the lockdown in your place of residence. So, in order to avoid any problems and unnecessary waiting, you can count on Booking Health to help you get a medical visa and start your treatment abroad in time.

The post 5 Tips to Boost Your Mood With Some Self-Care appeared first on Australian Times News.

]]>
Have you noticed a shift in your life lately? There’s something about this time of year where plans and priorities change for everyone. The days are getting shorter, the weather is getting colder and our lives are not buzzing with social plans like during the summer months. It’s normal to be dealing with a little slump in your mood right now!

Make Sure Your Body Is Getting What It Needs

Sometimes it’s the simplest things that make a world of difference in improving our moods. Are you meeting your body’s basic physiological needs? Ensure you are having three nutritious meals every day and don’t forget to hydrate. Keep a healthy snack and a bottle of water on hand to fight off those slumps in your mood.

The power of 8 hours of sleep every night is often underestimated. Turn off the television and hit the hay a little earlier to give your body the rest it needs. Do you struggle with sleeping? Read this useful guide on how to enjoy a good night’s sleep.

Break a Sweat

Exercise can be daunting. Especially during the winter months when the lure of your cosy living space is more appealing than heading outside.

Start small and aim for 30 minutes of movement every day. Get out for a walk, turn on a yoga tutorial, or run around the playground with your kids! It’s amazing what a rush of endorphins after exercise can do to lift your mood!

Be Kind To Yourself

Are you looking around and comparing yourself to others who seem to be doing it all seamlessly? The fact is, they are probably as stressed and overwhelmed as the rest of us.

Daily affirmations can be very useful in maintaining a positive mood. Start as you mean to go on and try beginning each day on a positive note. It could be as simple as looking in the mirror each morning and saying to yourself “I am motivated and I am confident”. Take a look at some other daily affirmations you could use to improve your mindset.

Enjoy a Little Me-time

Live your life for yourself as much as possible. If you enjoy going to a dance class or meeting your friends to kick a football around, go do it! It is often after these activities when we feel most like we are living our lives to the fullest.

It may sound superficial, but feeling good about your outer appearance can also give you that pep in your step. Take a little time to glow up every day! Spray some nice smells, put on your favourite lipstick, and style that hair. Never have a bad hair day again with these useful tips from Schwarzkopf on haircare.

Talk It Out

Getting your stresses and worries off your chest can do wonders for releasing some tension and boosting your mood. Don’t hold your feelings inside and allow them to fester. Saying your thoughts out loud to a friend, family member, or medical professional can put things into perspective and you will likely be provided with some reassurance.

New Study Finds Oranges Can Be Used To Detect Cancer https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/health-wellness/new-study-finds-oranges-can-be-used-to-detect-cancer/ Fri, 10 Dec 2021 00:31:00 +0000 https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/?p=2453238 When life gives you oranges, leave them to go rotten as we finally have a new orange discovery!

The post New Study Finds Oranges Can Be Used To Detect Cancer appeared first on Australian Times News.

]]>
If you have oranges that have gone bad, you don’t necessarily have to throw them away. These oranges can now contribute to the greater good.

The University of Sydney has recently discovered a way to detect cancer way before it actually becomes cancerous. Thanks to the new nanobiosenser, cancer will be detected even before it becomes problematic.

“Off” oranges can detect cancer

Like many diseases, cancer usually takes years or even decades before symptoms start showing and by the time symptoms start showing, it is too late to treat it.

According to COSMO, The nanobiosenser is a tiny probe that “glows” fluorescently in human cells, and signals if those cells become acidic, indicating that cancer is not far off. This shows which cells are at the greatest risk of cancer, so preventative measures can be taken.

With this new study, many are hopeful that it may turn around many cancer cases that do not end up with a positive result.

Speedy and accurate results

Not only will it detect cancer before it becomes cancerous but it will detect a cancerous cell in a matter of a minute! Talk about the new age of technology!

In order to see whether these cells are cancerous or not, a small tissue biopsy is taken from the patient and put in a petri dish. Thereafter the biosensor is applied to the cells and examined under a fluorescent microscope which picks up tiny changes in light.

If the cells are healthy, the biosensor shines brightly, but if the cells are more on the acidic side, the light dulls which is an indication that the cells are precancerous. At this time, the necessary steps can be taken to treat cancer before it becomes bigger.

Who would have thought a simple fruit could do such wonders? We will no longer only be hearing an apple a day keeps the doctor away as the oranges will be taking the lime light!

How To Improve Mental Health? https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/health-wellness/how-to-improve-mental-health/ Tue, 30 Nov 2021 19:54:47 +0000 https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/?p=2453086 So what can you do to improve your mental health and prevent a minor mental issue from becoming a permanent problem? We’ve assembled this short list of habits you can develop to improve your mental health.

The post How To Improve Mental Health? appeared first on Australian Times News.

]]>
Most people suffer from some form of mental health issue at least once in their lifetime, many more than once. For some, mental health is a continuing and chronic problem that they just can’t seem to get away from. In general, mental health issues start small and build up over time. The more they are left unchecked, the bigger they become.

Talk Things Out

Whether you find yourself a counsellor or take a close friend into confidence, talking through issues with an outside party can be helpful. Not only will this help you to organise your thoughts and feelings and make sense of the mess in your head, but it will also allow you to get another opinion as to whether you need to seek further help.

Get active

Studies show that keeping up with regular exercise not only keeps your body fit and healthy but has a highly positive effect on your mind as well. The chemicals released in your body after exercise will boost your mood, help with concentration, make you sleep better and generally improve your well being.

Take some time out

Whether you hop in the bath with some candles, take a walk on the beach or spend a relaxing day out, getting out of your routine and spending time with yourself is an excellent way to get your mind to switch off. If you can afford to, booking a pamper weekend away or investing in some time at an exclusive mental health treatment centre will go a long way to improving your state of mind.

Nourish yourself

These days life is so fast-paced that many of us find ourselves grabbing the quickest, most convenient fast foods that we can swallow down in minutes before moving on to the next item on our to-do list. Not only do these foods not nourish our bodies, but we also miss out on the opportunity to slow down while cooking, fully experiencing the tastes and aromas of good food. Get yourself some quality ingredients and take some time to properly feed your body; along with feeling better physically, your mental health will improve too.

Last thoughts/ Wrapping up/ Conclusion

Incorporating one or more of these actions into your life will improve your mental health and set you on a path to feeling better.

4 Reasons CBD infused gummies work best for anxiety https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/health-wellness/4-reasons-cbd-infused-gummies-work-best-for-anxiety/ Tue, 23 Nov 2021 10:53:32 +0000 https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/?p=2452879 Are you feeling tired and lethargic due to your hectic work schedule or having anxiety attacks due to some reason? What if I tell you, you can reduce all these stress and anxiety attacks without a prescription, that too in a tasty and sugary way?

The post 4 Reasons CBD infused gummies work best for anxiety appeared first on Australian Times News.

]]>
If you have heard of CBD, then you know what I’m talking about. CBD products are available in many forms, such as oils, tinctures, creams, capsules, and gummies. CBD gummies have recently made their presence in the market and have taken the market by storm. Nowadays CBD infused gummies are readily available across the country, and you can find the best CBD infused gummies for anxiety UK effortlessly over the counter.

In January 2019, the CBD extract got the novel food status by the European Council, which made CBD legal in the UK. Now, there are plenty of online and offline marketplaces from where you can buy pure CBD gummies legally. Simultaneously, the recent surge in sales has caused low-quality products in some cases. Which one should be aware of also. Every day, more and more people in the United Kingdom are introducing CBD products in their life. What makes CBD gummies special is that they don’t have a hemp-like bitter aftertaste or earthy smell, unlike CBD oils. Instead, in the case of CBD-infused gummies, you will get a sugary taste and most likely a flavor of your choice. So, let’s see 4 reasons why CBD gummies such as Koi CBD work best for anxiety.

 1. Relieves mood

CBD gummies have made relaxing moods much easier and more discrete. As the gummies are filled with CBD oils inside them, they follow a similar path of action. While CBD oils are applied sublingually and are absorbed almost instantaneously, gummies first go to the stomach, and from there, they are digested and absorbed by the blood capillaries. Due to which gummies take some extra time to show their effects, you can take them before entering a meeting or interview or facing a challenging situation. According to some research, CBD gummies may also help reduce anxiety in patients suffering from a social anxiety disorder when facing public speaking tasks.

The CBD reacts with the CB1 and CB2 receptors of the human brain. These receptors are part of the endocannabinoid system of the human body. The endocannabinoid or ECS system is mainly responsible for improving mood, regulating the sleep cycle, appetite, and immune response.

Some researchers have also pointed out that CBD may help in reducing anxiety by increasing serotonin levels.

 • You won’t feel high

Many people prefer to take intoxicating substances such as marijuana or heroin to cope with the anxiety temporarily.

Although a “high” feeling can take your mind off the anxiety for the time being, once the effects wear off, you will crave more substance. It will further lead to addiction, and if not provided on time, you will start experiencing withdrawal symptoms soon. The “high” feeling associated with marijuana is due to Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC); however, in CBD gummies, you will find less than 0.2% THC. Additionally, CBD has the same properties as THC, except it doesn’t make you lose your mind. So, with CBD infused gummies, you can easily take care of your anxiety problems without losing your mind.

 • Better sleep

One of the prime reasons for anxiety is the irregular sleep cycle and insomnia. As already mentioned, CBD has a positive effect on the endocannabinoid system of the body. Many users have reported better sleep after taking products like CBD-infused gummies.

Moreover, CBD may also improve rough sleeping conditions like Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder besides increasing the wakefulness of the user.

CBD gummies can also maintain the level of cortisol, commonly known as the stress hormone. People suffering from anxiety have generally high levels of cortisol which can hinder the natural sleep cycle, positively attributing to the increased anxiety levels.

 • Clear dosage

CBD gummies offer a pretty straightforward approach with respect to dosage. Each candy has been filled with an equal and predetermined dose. Due to this clear-cut understanding of dosage, a user doesn’t need to think about overdose, unlike the CBD oils, where a user can accidentally overdose by the dropper. Besides, gummies are easier to carry, hide, and use without getting any attention. Just open the box and pop the candy in the mouth; no need for an extra set-up or dropper. The discreet way further boosts the confidence of the user suffering from anxiety who doesn’t want to get noticed in the crowd.

CBD dosage for anxiety:

There isn’t any prescribed dose of CBD; however, some research has found that a dose of 300 mg to 600 mg may help people suffering from a social anxiety disorder. According to research done by experts in 2019, usually, a person can tolerate up to 1500 mg of CBD per day. After that, the side effects like drowsiness, fatigue, loss of appetite, and diarrhea may appear.

Conclusion:

Although CBD gummies are legal in the United Kingdom, they are not much regulated. To grow and sell CBD in the UK, you will need a license from the UK home office. At present, CBD gummies are classified as novel food, and they require premarket authorization. CBD gummies may help treat anxiety, but most of the researches is in their preliminary phases. However, for the time being, no government agency regulates the use of CBD products, and it is available in the market as a health supplement. Due to which while using the products, users’ discretion is always necessary. As a user, always look for the red flags associated with the product and search for third-party lab test results to refrain from buying CBD gummies from shady sellers.

How can therapy help with stress management? https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/health-wellness/how-can-therapy-help-with-stress-management/ Tue, 23 Nov 2021 09:31:37 +0000 https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/?p=2452867 Stress is a major problem in today's society and can have severe effects on one's health if left untreated. In the US alone, over 40 million people suffer from cardiovascular disease as a result of stress.

The post How can therapy help with stress management? appeared first on Australian Times News.

]]>
Moreover, stress can also affect other areas of your life including family, finances, relationships, and so on. Therapy for stress management is an alternative option to dealing with stress on one’s own without the help of medication.

So, is it true that therapy can help you cope with stress? Well, stress can be harmful if it grows in excess and apart from medication, therapy would boost the healing process. A therapist helps manage the situation by identifying the major stressors in your life. Additionally, the therapeutic process will also provide for releasing all emotions so that you feel safe from them after completing treatment!

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for Stress Management

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a common form of therapy used to treat individuals with stress-related issues. It focuses on how your thoughts and feelings can affect the way you act. Most importantly, it helps you develop ways for coping better in stressful situations. Therefore, CBT has effectively been used in the treatment of those suffering from depression, eating disorders, anxiety problems and panic disorder.

CBT therapy typically includes a combination of different activities. This includes:

 • Identifying the stressors in your life
 • Finding better ways to deal with life stressors
 • Dealing with negative thoughts or emotions related to stressful events, and
 • Practicing relaxation techniques

How does therapy help to deal with stress?

Therapy is a place where you get to talk about what has been going on in your life. Consequently, you will get support from your therapist. You can work together to identify the patterns of thinking and behaviour that contribute to your stress. This should point to anything making you feel overwhelmed. After that, you start figuring out what works best for you in terms of stress management.

Research shows that therapy is effective for stress management because:-

 • Therapy encourages you to take a step back, identify each element of what’s stressing you out and deal with it
 • It helps people learn to recognize and correct their negative thinking patterns, which is one of the key causes of stress.
 • CBT successfully treats chronic fatigue syndrome, which is often related to stress and anxiety.
 • Using therapy helps to reduce symptoms of panic disorder when used alongside medication more than using medication alone.
 • It helps with other problematic behaviors related to stress management, especially through Dialectical Behavioral Therapy
 • Therapeutic treatment focuses on mindful acceptance of a single, present moment, especially through while Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.
 • It aims to resolve personal wounds from your past, particularly through Emotion-Focused Therapy

Where to find therapy to manage your stress

Now that therapy is proven as effective in stress management, you can go for it. Therapy is available through the following channels:

 1. Referrals from a primary care doctor or psychiatrist
 2. Through recommendations from friends
 3. Using online directories for professional online therapy services
 4. Searching the APA’s database of psychologists
 5. Therapy Directory, which is an independent directory made up of verified members.

Important Advice!

Find a therapist with the right personality for the best results. When you call a therapist, ask about his or her approach. Most importantly, see how it meshes with your needs. Make sure you can explain what is stressing you out. From there on, get an idea of whether that person will be able to help.

You should feel understood and respected in the interaction—not judged or hurried. Above all, check various options and pick the best especially when working with budget.

Final Thoughts

We all experience stress. However, it can become harmful if not managed properly. Fortunately, therapy provides an opportunity to manage these feelings without any risk or fear. It works for those struggling with managing their own emotions and the effects of stressful situations in life.

Therapy works by first identifying major sources that may be causing additional problems. These could be things like high-pressure jobs at work, family relationships and so on. Therapists allow client’s freedom by giving space from expectation to explore what might have caused this emotional response.

How to Take Care of Your Closure Lace Frontal Wigs https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/health-wellness/how-to-take-care-of-your-closure-lace-frontal-wigs/ Mon, 22 Nov 2021 10:44:45 +0000 https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/?p=2452831 Lace frontal wigs are a great asset for any woman who wants to have the natural look of a lace front wig but is not yet ready to give up her fabulous weaves.

The post How to Take Care of Your Closure Lace Frontal Wigs appeared first on Australian Times News.

]]>
If you are just trying out lace wigs or just cannot part with your favorite weave brand, a lace frontal is a nice introduction to lace wigs. This guide presents a brief overview of what there is to know about lace frontals.

Luvmehair provides the highest quality hair products in the industry, while guaranteeing professional and informed expert assistance for a pampering online shopping experience.

What is a Closure Lace Frontal?

A lace frontal is similar to a front closure lace frontal in many ways. The lace is around the perimeter of the hairline to provide a natural-looking appearance. The main difference is that a lace frontal is solely a piece that can be installed from the hairline up to the crown of the head. Many lace frontals are shorter than this providing only 3 to 5 inches of lace.

The lace frontal also achieves everything that other lace wigs do. High-quality human or synthetic hair is installed on most lace frontals. These are also cheaper than many full lace wigs and front lace wigs because they are half the size.

Why Should I Consider a Lace Frontal?

A lace frontal is a great purchase for women seeking more natural-looking weaves but does not want to commit to the full lace wig. Many women are fans of their hair weaves and extensions minus the unnatural hairline or scalp. With a weave, you have direct access to much of the scalp, unlike a lace wig where you must remove the entire unit.

A lace frontal is also a good option for women suffering from thinning hairlines or at the crown of their head. If you have a thick head of hair, you do not want to add on a full lace wig. Many women like to think of a lace frontal as a spot treatment for their hair. Place it in the spot that needs it most, no more and no less.

How is a lace frontal installed? Can I do this myself like a lace wig?

A lace frontal is best installed by a professional since more advanced weaving and hair extension techniques are also employed. If you are very well versed in lace wigs and hair weaving, then this is something that you can most likely do. If you are only good at one of these skills, you will need professional help.

A lace frontal is installed like any other lace wig around the hairline area. For the back half, some stylists choose to directly integrate the lace frontal into the extension through braiding techniques while others prefer basic blending of the two units.

By using this guide, you can better acquaint yourself with lace frontals. Whether you are a weave or extension lover for life, it never hurts to try something new. As always, make sure to seek professional help if you are unsure about the lace wig application and using lace wig hair products.

9 ways to support your teen’s mental health as restrictions ease https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/news/9-ways-to-support-your-teens-mental-health-as-restrictions-ease/ Sat, 20 Nov 2021 05:32:00 +0000 https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/?p=2452784 Now, as restrictions are eased – and school, home and social lives return to something resembling normal – young people are having to make significant adjustments as they face new pressures.

The post 9 ways to support your teen’s mental health as restrictions ease appeared first on Australian Times News.

Marie Yap, Monash University; Anthony Jorm, The University of Melbourne, and Mairead Cardamone-Breen, Monash University

Headlines about the impact of the pandemic on youth mental health have left many parents worried about their children and unsure what they can do to help.

Now, as restrictions are eased – and school, home and social lives return to something resembling normal – young people are having to make significant adjustments as they face new pressures.

Parents need clear, evidence-based, practical strategies to support their teen’s mental health. But this can be hard to find.

To fill this gap, our yet-to-be-published study asked 35 international experts (researchers, health professionals and parent advocates) what parents can do to support their teenager’s mental health during the pandemic.

Here are their nine key tips:

1. Parents, look after yourselves

While parents’ natural instincts are to be concerned about their children (and possibly ageing parents), looking after your own needs will put you in a better position to support those you care about.

2. Keep the conversation open

Constantly changing local regulations and restrictions, and rules around reopening, can make teens more anxious.

Help your teen feel more in control by providing them with clear, up-to-date and age-appropriate information about the pandemic and restrictions when the situation changes.

Teenagers are likely to seek answers from their peers, online, and from social media. Additionally, they can see a kids doctor online through a child-friendly video call that will give the pediatrician the opportunity to talk with and assess how well the teenager looks. Help your teen get information from reliable and credible sources, such as government websites or the World Health Organization.

Talking about the pandemic and easing of restrictions can help them understand and cope with what they’re hearing.

3. Support teens to follow the local rules and restrictions

Be a good role model by following the local regulations and restrictions yourself.

Model flexibility and problem-solving by showing your teen how you adjust your daily life in response to changing regulations and restrictions.

4. Accept your teen’s emotions

It’s normal for teens to feel a wide range of strong emotions at different points during the pandemic: angry, scared, sad, frustrated, grief, worried, bored, confused, isolated, concerned. Kids doctor online.

You can help your teen cope with these by:

Asking and listening. Ask how they’re feeling and coping, especially as the situation changes. When they open up, focus on listening – what they need most is empathy, compassion and comfort.

Showing them how you do it. Teens look to their parents to see how to respond and how worried they should be. Try to set a good example by appearing as calm as you can, and using healthy coping strategies yourself.

Being patient, perhaps more than usual.

Being reassuring but realistic. Despite negative news they may be hearing, teens need their parents’ reassurance their family will get through the pandemic together and things will improve over time. But be careful not to make unrealistic promises.

Monitoring. Keep an eye on your teen’s stress levels – look for changes in their behaviour, health and how they’re thinking and feeling. Encourage them to do things that have helped them cope with stressful times in the past.

5. Help your teen work out what they can and can’t control

Encourage them to focus on what they can control. For example, young people can control their own COVID-safe behaviours (such as wearing masks and following local restrictions), but need to accept they can’t control the behaviour of others.

Model helpful ways of dealing with uncertainty by showing them how you accept what is outside your control and focus your effort on things you can control.

Show appreciation for their efforts to adjust to pandemic challenges, big or small.

6. Provide support as needed

The ongoing uncertainties during the pandemic can affect teens many months after local restrictions have eased.

So be prepared to provide ongoing emotional support as needed, rather than assume all will be well because life is “back to normal”.

7. Establish routines

Routines help teens feel more organised, in control, safe and secure and less stressed – this can help protect their mental health.

Ensure your teen’s routine includes set times for homework, meals and snacks, physical activity, free time for fun and relaxation, and time for socialising.

Regular sleep routines are also important. This means having a regular bed time and wake time, and minimising the use of electronic devices before bed. Review and adjust this routine with your teen as needed, such as when local restrictions change.

8. Adjust your expectations

With the changes and uncertainty caused by the pandemic, you may need to adjust some expectations of your teenager and of yourself. Focus on emotional and physical well-being rather than perfection or high productivity.

Try to practice self-compassion and forgiveness towards your teen and yourself if either of you don’t meet your expectations.

9. Look for silver linings

Try to convey a sense of confidence to your teen that things will improve over time. Encourage any optimism or hope your teen shows.

Showing compassion, empathy and kindness to others can also benefit your teen. It can help them gain perspective, give a sense of achievement and pride, and give opportunities for social interaction. Encourage your teen to take up opportunities to help others when they can.

When to get help

Seek professional mental health support if your teen has major difficulties adjusting to challenges of the pandemic or reopening, or you are struggling with your own mental health.

Some signs you or your teen might need professional support include changes in mood or behaviour that impact school, work or relationships, withdrawal from friends or family, intense distress, and problems that don’t seem to be improving with time.

Remember, by seeking support for yourself when needed, you are also setting a good example for your teen.

How to Get Good Quality Sleep? https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/health-wellness/how-to-get-good-quality-sleep/ Thu, 18 Nov 2021 09:44:34 +0000 https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/?p=2452714 Many people overlook the importance of getting good quality sleep, however, sleep can have a major influence on your life. Good quality sleep allows you to be more productive and helps you stay healthy and fit, both physically and mentally.

The post How to Get Good Quality Sleep? appeared first on Australian Times News.

]]>
Obviously, not getting quality sleep can make you grumpier and irritated the entire day and can lead to many health problems over time. Sleep anxiety is also a common problem nowadays and can disrupt a good night’s sleep. However, you can beat it using a Mela weighted blanket for adults which is designed to calm down the feelings of anxiety and help you have a deep sleep.

If you have been struggling with the quality of sleep lately, and you’re on the hunt for ways that improve sleep quality naturally, keep reading this article!

Restrict the Use of Electronic Devices

If you want to get the recommended seven to eight hours of sleep every night without countless tosses and turns, you need to restrict the use of blue light-emitting electronic devices such as laptops, tablets, phones, and computers by evening.

As exposure to blue light can inhibit the production of melatonin in your body, exposure to it right before bedtime can affect your sleep quality drastically.

If it’s crucial to answer a few work-related emails on your electronic devices, you can use apps that control the amount of blue light.

Create the Perfect Sleep Environment

The “perfect” sleep environment can be created if the room conditions match your preference. Whether it’s the streetlight peeking through the window, extra loud neighbors, uncomfortable bedding, or unsatisfactory room temperature, you need to fix them to allow undisrupted sleep.

For instance, getting a comfortable sleep eye mask or dark blinds can prevent your exposure to light. While a white noise machine can cancel out all the noise distractions, adjusting the thermostat of your room according to your body temperature and investing in the right, supportive bedding can all help in creating the ideal sleep environment.

Limit Your Consumption of Junk Food or Caffeine

Binging on junk food, especially fried food, right before bedtime can give rise to digestive issues and heartburn. This can make you feel uneasy and, therefore, hard to get a good quality sleep.

Likewise, the consumption of caffeinated drinks like energy drinks and coffee in the evening can also affect the production of sleep hormones.

Hence, if you want to get an adequate quantity and quality of sleep, you should avoid the consumption of junk food and caffeine by evening. Instead, you can have healthy snacks like fresh fruits, dry fruits, or soothing chamomile tea.

Avoid Long Naps

Power naps for a maximum of 20 minutes can be ideal for you to refresh and recharge your body during the day, however, never-ending naps can make you feel more lethargic and grumpy as you will force your body to wake up while your body is in the deep sleep mode.

This can also make it hard for you to sleep quickly at your bedtime. Therefore, you should keep your naps no longer than 20 minutes to ensure you remain active during the daytime and doze off as soon as you hit your fluffy pillow while following your sleep schedule.

Sapphire Hair Clinic – A Look into Hair Transplant and What to Expect https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/health-wellness/sapphire-hair-clinic-a-look-into-hair-transplant-and-what-to-expect/ Mon, 15 Nov 2021 09:41:49 +0000 https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/?p=2452603 Are you losing hair and want to restore them? Having a hair transplant procedure is the ideal option for you. The challenge is common for young and ageing people.

Thanks to the treatments, you can find a remedy. You do not need to wait until you lose 50% of your hair to seek a solution. On the contrary, as soon as the hair starts thinning, you should consider the procedure.

An Overview of Hair Transplant

Restoring thinning hair improves wellbeing. It will boost self-esteem and enhance your appearance. The process involves harvesting healthy follicles and hair for transplanting to the area with no hair. However, there are different types of treatment you can get at Hair Transplant Istanbul. The methods include;

 • Follicular unit excision; it an invasive method that utilises micro punches to transplant hair from one area to another.
 • Follicular unit transplant; is a surgical procedure that takes a strip from the scalp to areas with no hair. It takes more time for the patient to recover than the follicular unit excision.
 • Low-level light therapy; is ideal during the initial stages of hair loss. The procedure uses low-intensity light wavelengths to initiate hair growth.
 • Injections; when the follicles can still regenerate, injections can help restore the hair. The method is new, and there is still research about its effectiveness.
 • Topicals; are medications that a person can apply to prevent hair loss or restore hair. You can find oral medications to aid with the problem.

Hair transplant before after shows the effectiveness of the various procedures in hair loss restoration. However, it is vital to talk to the specialist to know the best method to use.

What to Expect

Hair transplants are successful when you select a qualified surgeon for the procedures. Also, it relies on the thickness of hair the experts will be harvesting for transplanting. The time it takes for a session depends on the follicles or strips that the surgeon can transplant. A surgeon will use an aesthetic to make the procedure comfortable and less painful.

It would be best to go for follow-up procedures to achieve the best and long-lasting results. The reason is that the hair may continue to thin after the initial treatment, and the subsequent treatment will fill the patches to attain thick hair. It helps make the outcome as natural as possible. Also, it is essential to follow the surgeon’s advice post-treatment. They may require you to exercise frequently, engage in light activities, and not wash your hair for a couple of days after the procedure. You need to follow the instructions to get the best outcome.

Are there any Side Effects?

An experienced surgeon will ensure there are no risks and minimal side effects to hair transplant therapies. However, there are several side effects to the treatments. A patient may bleed from the incisions, and there may be risks of infections. In addition, the area where a surgeon harvests or transplants hair may have scars. The skin may swell, and pain but will heal after a few days. However, a surgeon may prescribe medications to counter the side effects.

7 signs you need professional help for drug addiction https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/health-wellness/7-signs-you-need-professional-help-for-drug-addiction/ Wed, 10 Nov 2021 09:17:53 +0000 https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/?p=2452461 (Partner Content) Going to rehab is a difficult decision. Ask Amy Whitehouse; she said, "No, no, no." There are social and financial implications, the fear of what others think of you, and addiction stigma.

The post 7 signs you need professional help for drug addiction appeared first on Australian Times News.

]]>
Asking for professional help to treat addiction is not a sign of weakness; it shows great courage that you are willing to make a positive change in your life.

Going to rehab early rather than later can prevent drug dependency from becoming an addiction, now referred to as substance use disorder. There is no straightforward cure but the condition can be successfully treated with an integrated addiction treatment programme.

There are telltale signs that misuse or abuse of drugs leads to or has developed into an addiction. If you answer ‘yes’ to the few listed below, you need to consider seeking professional help at White River Recovery drug rehab centre sooner rather than later.

Satisfying cravings for drugs is consuming your life

Addiction is defined as a “chronic, relapsing condition characterised by compulsive substance seeking and continued use despite harmful consequences and long-lasting changes in the brain.” You may have substance use disorder if your drug cravings are stronger than the risk of losing your job, broken relationships, getting into trouble with the law, financial difficulties and poor health. You may also have an addiction if you hide substances from loved ones, manipulate situations to get them and avoid family and friends to keep your habit a secret.

Do you find you need to take larger doses more often to get the same effect?

Tolerance occurs when you no longer respond to a drug the same way you did at first, so you take larger doses to get the same high you did at the start. Your brain adapts to dopamine surges from repeated drug use by reducing the numbers or shutting down receptors, counteracting the drug’s effect on your reward system. Drug tolerance leads to dependency, and addiction follows when changes to brain chemistry and function are permanent.

You experience withdrawal symptoms when you stop using drugs

You have developed drug dependency if you experience withdrawal symptoms when you reduce or stop using harmful substances. Your brain copes with repeated drug use by changing brain chemistry, reducing or shutting down dopamine receptors. Your body is thrown off balance if you reduce the amount or abruptly stop taking drugs, resulting in symptoms that can be mild, severe or life-threatening. Drug dependency doesn’t necessarily mean you have an addiction, but you are at risk.

You are struggling with your mental health

Substance dependency can lead to devastating mental health disorders. Repeated drug use causes permanent changes to your brain chemistry and function, leading to substance use disorder, a mental illness and complex brain disease. You’re also at significant risk of developing co-occurring mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, social phobia, aggression, suicidal thoughts, hallucinations and paranoia. Drug misuse or abuse can also trigger symptoms of schizophrenia.

Drugs are affecting your physical health

Drug toxicity affects your whole body and takes a heavy toll on your physical health, causing permanent damage to your heart, liver, lungs, brain, pancreas and central nervous system. Mild symptoms are teeth cavities, gum disease, abscesses, acne, baldness, insomnia and sexual dysfunction. Severe health problems include heart and lung disease, infectious diseases, seizures, brain damage, cancer, stillbirth, psychosis, suicidal thoughts and overdose.

You have tried a few times to quit but have been unsuccessful

Addiction is referred to as relapsing brain disease because toxic substances alter how your brain works and functions, leading to a compulsion to constantly seek out drugs. Studies show the relapse rate for alcohol and drug addiction is 40 to 60 percent (higher for heroin), but this depends on the substance used, stage of the disease, co-occurring disorders and type of treatment received.

The good news is addiction is a treatable disease, and the remission rate ranges from 60 to 80 percent. You can expect a good outcome if you seek help sooner rather than later at a professional rehabilitation centre that offers an integrated addiction treatment programme.

You feel lonely, sad or broken

Addiction is a lonely place to find yourself. As the problem worsens, you lose interest in family, friends and activities that used to bring you joy; you’ll increasingly isolate yourself and may undergo a dramatic personality change. Drug dependence affects your physical and mental health, leading to chronic illnesses, anxiety, depression, guilt, shame, paranoia, hallucinations, hopelessness, and despair. It can take you down a dark path to addiction, suicidal thoughts or attempts, overdose and, at its worse, death.

Get professional help before it’s too late

Professional treatment at an inpatient rehabilitation centre can save your life. The longer you ignore the problem, the more damage you will do to your whole body. You can rely on an integrated addiction treatment programme overseen by a multi-disciplinary team to restore your mind, body and soul. Professional addiction care incorporates medical detox, medicine supervision, psychotherapy, holistic therapies, regular exercise and healthy, balanced meals.

CBD: Does Being Certified Organic Matter? https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/health-wellness/cbd-does-being-certified-organic-matter/ Thu, 28 Oct 2021 06:01:04 +0000 https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/?p=2452084 With the amount of hype being thrown around about CBD these days, it can be hard to figure what features are essential and which are just marketing fluff. Many are wondering where being certified organic falls on this spectrum, especially when amongst CBD users. And the answer can be surprising for organic doubters.

The post CBD: Does Being Certified Organic Matter? appeared first on Australian Times News.

]]>
For CBD, being certified organic means that a good is produced under strict regulations that govern almost everything around how it’s made or grown—from start to finish. Typically, this prohibits the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, and other artificial ingredients at any stage of the process.

Of course, the numerous benefits of organic CBD can’t be distilled in a simple paragraph. This is because the CBD industry has numerous peculiarities that make organic goods especially appealing. First let’s look at what being organic means in general, and be sure to stick around till the end, as we will highlight some of our favorite CBD brands with extensive organic product lines such as Flawless CBD.

What Does Certified Organic Mean?

The organic movement first started years ago by farmers who wanted to be less reliant on the use of synthetic materials in the growth of their crops and animals. In recent times a USDA-organic certification has become a sign to many of uncompromised morals and quality. This is because becoming organic-certified requires farmers and other producers to adhere to a rigid set of criteria.

Some of the things a USDA-organic certification requires includes:

 • Livestock that is raised free from the use of artificial growth hormones.
 • Using only natural fertilizers and pest control methods.
 • Maintaining rigid soil quality standards during use and up to three years prior.
 • Multi-ingredient foods must maintain a high level of standards throughout the entire production process.
 • All organic products must be completely free of genetically modified organisms (or GMOs).

Why Does Being Certified Organic Matter

Considering how organic products are often more expensive than their generic opposites, it can be worthwhile to ask why being certified organic really matters at all?

In short, being verified USDA-organic is a big deal for reasons other than just the quality of the product and the ecological impact of its production. It says a lot about the values of the brand that is choosing to provide organic products, as meeting the myriad of regulatory hurdles to achieve USDA certification is definitely not considered the easy way out.

Whatever source materials are used in your favorite CBD products are still in the end ingested into the consumer’s body, along with any pesticides or heavy metals that may be present in conventionally cultivated goods. The only way to combat such dangers is to go organic.

And for the end-user, the greatest gift that going with organic products may give is the peace of mind that they provide. After all, at the very least, one is assured of ingesting much less harmful byproducts, fertilizers, and other chemicals being involved in the production process.

What Brands are Certified Organic

Even just a few years ago, finding organic CBD products used to be much more difficult. And finding brands that had an entire organic CBD product line was nearly unheard of. Even today, the number of CBD brands that offer solely organic goods is barely more than a handful. Luckily for you, there is no need to go searching for them, as we have highlighted three of our favorites below.

Joy Organics

Based in Fort Collins, CO., Joy Organics is a juggernaut in the CBD space, and obviously, the brand takes organic practices seriously enough to put it in their name. And it isn’t just the ingredients that are certified organic, as almost every CBD salve stick, tincture, and oil that Joy Organics sells is a USDA-Certified Organic product.

What you’ll like: It should come as no surprise that the use of organic ingredients is extended to the inventive and inviting flavorings that make Joy Organics tinctures top of the line. Choosing between tranquil mint and tropical sunrise varieties can be a tough one, so why not give both a try?

Something to consider: Joy Organics offers a wide range of CBD products, including both full-spectrum and broad-spectrum formulations. This is great as it gives consumers a variety of choices, however, it should be noted that those who want to abstain from even trace amounts of THC should look for the latter formulation.

NuLeaf

Another one of the few CBD brands to offer a completely organic line is NuLeaf, which also happens to be based in Colorado. With users given options for everything from balms and softgels to oil and pet products. And with such a wide range, it can be easy to find the product that works for your needs.

What you’ll like: NuLeaf offers simple products that are easy to use and contain a full range of cannabinoids that some other brands strip out during processing.

Something to consider: All of NuLeaf’s CBD products are of the full-spectrum variety, which means that those wishing to avoid THC altogether may want to try a different brand that offers broad-spectrum formulas.

Charlotte’s Web

One of the best-known brands in the CBD space, Charlotte’s Web produces several organic products, though their overall operation falters by some metrics when compared to the two brands above. The biggest difference would be the fact that not all Charlotte’s Web products are certified organic. This means that consumers should carefully check each product’s ingredient list to be ensured they are receiving a completely organic product.

What you’ll like: Even with the above issues, Charlotte’s Web still can offer many CBD products that utilize high-quality, natural ingredients and compassionate cultivation practices. Any difference in color or aroma between one tincture and another is likely due to naturally changing factors in the production process.

Something to consider: Received a B on the latest Hemp CBD Scorecard from the Center for Food Safety.

We’re Always Here to Help!

Finally, we hope we’ve illuminated the reasons why being organic is so important for CBD and its users particularly. The benefits of choosing USDA organic CBD tincture products are many and the drawbacks are few. If you’re interested in giving CBD a try yourself, goods from any of the above brands are well worth sampling.

Of course, if you have any further questions or comments, please don’t hesitate to reach out! And, as always, thank you for reading!

Donovanosis STD on the rise in the UK – Doctor calls it terrifying https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/health-wellness/donovanosis-std-on-the-rise-in-the-uk-doctor-calls-it-terrifying/ Tue, 26 Oct 2021 18:17:00 +0000 https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/?p=2452003 The Donovanosis infections have been escalating in the UK and doctors are concerned.

Donovanosis, a rare sexually transmitted disease is on the rise in the UK and doctors are calling it terrifying.

Donovanosis transmission

As of today, Donovanosis exist in regions such as South Africa, India, and South America. The disease reportedly thrives in humid regions.

Since Donovanosis occurs through sexual contact, this disease is able to be significantly prevented by using contraceptives. However, there are rare cases in which an STD can occur through non-sexual or skin-to-skin contact.

While this sexually transmitted disease can be treated, it can lead to permanent scarring, discoloration and even swelling around the genitals.

The disease explained

Dr. Karan Raj recently took to Tik Tok to explain what the disease is and what it does to your body.

At this time, doctors note that it is imperative that patients complete their duration of antibiotics treatment for ulcers to fully heal.

Precautions

Now, while our concerns have remained on the dangers of this sexually transmitted disease, we need to turn to other matters of concern.

Since individuals with a sexually transmitted disease are already prone to painful ulcers, doctors note that these individuals are at high risk of transmitting as well as getting HIV.

Other risks concerning Donovanosis

Obtaining HIV can be a very dire situation to be in as this evidently leads to critical health conditions.

In addition, Donovanosis will only be noticeable in about three weeks but could similarly only start affecting and appearing on the body after a year.

Takeaway

So, the main message remains that everyone should remain safe and smart in decision-making with their partners. While there are many who choose to have multiple partners, considering health risks is a good start.

Elle Macpherson, the 57-year-old supermodel intrigued many users after comments of Aborigine ancestry.

During a make-up tutorial with vogue, the model gave vogue subscribers her latest beauty tricks.

Elle’s beauty secrets

While the mother of two reached for all her beauty tools, she chatted away about what her real beauty secret is.

The WelleCo founder revealed that feeling good from within is key to feeling good on the outside.

While some reach for their best anti-aging serums, Elle chooses to reach for a supplement to keep all toxins out of her body.

Ancestry comments

The model also made some comments about her ancestry which left many heads turned.

“My eyes are almost black, that’s the Aborigine in me”

This remark has since been edited out of the video as using this term is generally perceived as insensitive.

Macpherson’s younger sister commented that they are not indigenous nor have they traced their ancestry.

Elle Macpherson has since not commented on the statement made yet. Her younger sister, however, seemed to have been very annoyed when clearing up the comments made in the tutorial.

While Elle’s modelling career might have come to a standstill, the beauty icon still seems to have a hold on the fashion industry with her established brand WelleCo.

People fearing the dentist during Covid is affecting their health https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/health-wellness/people-fearing-the-dentist-during-covid-is-affecting-their-health/ Mon, 18 Oct 2021 13:54:20 +0000 https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/?p=2451738 While, some professions like IT services, investment banking and customer service representatives have managed to carry on by switching to the work-from-home mode, the more ‘physical’ professions have taken a hit. One of these professions is the dental profession.

The post People fearing the dentist during Covid is affecting their health appeared first on Australian Times News.

]]>
Needless to say, Covid-19 has been a catastrophe for humankind. It is the worst pandemic outbreak since the Spanish flu about a century ago. It has taken millions of lives so far and hurt billions of livelihoods around the globe.

The Apprehension

In these pandemic times, people are rightly worried about their and their family’s safety. Accordingly, they have reduced meetings and contact and cut down on inessential travel. Covid-19 spreads when droplets or aerosols containing the virus enter the body of a healthy person either through breathing or through contact.

During a dental check-up, the patient’s mouth is in direct contact with the instruments of the dentist and also in close proximity to the dental team, so some people have been apprehensive about visiting a dentist.

The Consequence

Although, people are avoiding going to a dentist to prevent getting infected from Covid, this is turning out to be a classic case of ‘cure being worse than disease’. People are fearing the dentist because they want to remain healthy, but ironically, by doing this, the overall effect on their health and wellbeing is negative.

The Oral Health Foundation highlight the importance of oral health:

“Good oral health can have so many wonderful life-changing benefits. A healthy smile can truly transform our visual appearance, the positivity of our mind-set, as well as improving the health of not only our mouth but our body too.”

Pain, infection and tooth loss are the most common consequences of oral disease, causing difficulties with chewing, swallowing, speaking, and can disrupt sleep and productivity

Oral health is rightly called the window to overall health. Our mouth is filled with many kinds of bacteria, who are usually harmless. However, in case our oral health deteriorates, their numbers increase and they enter our respiratory and digestive tracts and make us ill.

A growing body of research shows that deteriorating oral health can also cause serious illness like Endocarditis, Cardiovascular disease and pneumonia. Endocarditis is caused when the oral bacteria manage to enter our intestinal tract and if they get pulled in our lungs, they can cause pneumonia. Therefore, avoiding a dentist due to fear of Covid is harming the health of people.

The Solutions

The pandemic has had a highly disruptive effect on people’s personal and professional lives. One of the most important effect of the pandemic has been the pushing of a number of jobs and tasks to the digital domains. As already mentioned, several professions have replaced human contact with digital interaction due to Covid-19 and dentistry is no different. This has given rise to tele-dentistry or digital dentistry.

Tele-dentistry allows people to consult dentists in a safe manner, away from any risk of getting infected with Covid. It is true that some people feel vulnerable and at risk of getting Covid when they visit the dentist. However, it is in fact, the dentist who is at greater risk during an in-person consultation, of contracting the virus, since they meet many people in a day and hence have a greater possibility of coming in contact with a person infected with Covid. Tele-dentistry is an appropriate arrangement in these times, which keeps both the patient and the dentist safe.

However, tele-consultation can not completely replace in-person consultation. In some cases an accurate assessment of a patient can only be made by the dentist through a physical inspection. Dentists have always worked to very high standards of infection control in their practices, well before the pandemic began. They wear full PPE during examinations and procedures, and forward thinking practices are explaining their infection control procedures to patients to help them understand that it is safe to visit a dentist. High quality dental supplies available from companies like Kent Express help to ensure that dentists can work efficiently and maintain the highest standards of infection control.

Every crisis is an opportunity. If the dental industry is able to walk the extra mile in catering to the concerns of patients in these difficult times, it will increase patient trust, and that will be beneficial for the entire profession in the future.

Nursing in the UK vs Australia: Which Country Has Better Healthcare? https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/health-wellness/nursing-in-the-uk-vs-australia-which-country-has-better-healthcare/ Wed, 29 Sep 2021 13:36:20 +0000 https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/?p=2451103 Healthcare is used globally, but many countries have different standards. Both the UK and Australia are recognised as top countries for their healthcare service, but which is better? Read on to find out the real healthcare winner…

The post Nursing in the UK vs Australia: Which Country Has Better Healthcare? appeared first on Australian Times News.

]]>
Although the UK and Australia are renowned for their excellent healthcare systems, negligence in nursing can still take place. Unfortunately, no country can get it consistently right and medical negligence can have a seriously negative impact on people’s opinions of the healthcare services in these countries.

Despite the occasional negligence claim, the UK and Australia have two of the best healthcare systems in the world, but who’s takes the lead and is slightly better? In this article, we’ll discuss the healthcare service in each country and the benefits of each. So, let’s delve a bit further to determine the healthcare winner…

What Healthcare System Does the UK Provide?

The UK offers a public healthcare system called the National Health Service, better known by those who use it as the NHS.

The NHS is free for those who are permanently or temporarily living in the UK (whether they are a British citizen or not). The NHS is funded 98.8% through taxation and National Insurance, and a slight 1.2% is funded by charging patients for specific things like prescriptions and visiting the dentist.

Unlike other countries, the majority of British citizens will not need to have healthcare insurance because of the services that the NHS covers; these include:

 • Hospital admissions
 • Hospital treatments
 • Surgery
 • Minor injuries treatments (A&E)
 • Doctor appointments
 • Referred specialist treatments
 • Sexual health services
 • Contraception
 • Maternity services

What Healthcare System Does Australia Provide?

The healthcare system in Australia is known as Medicare. Similar to the funding of the NHS in the UK, Medicare is publicly funded by Australian taxpayers.

Those who are on a higher income and don’t have reasonable health insurance are required to pay a Medicare levy surcharge, resulting in many Australians having health insurance to avoid the additional cost. Medicare covers many different medical services, including:

 • Hospital admissions
 • Hospital treatments
 • Doctor appointments
 • Eye tests
 • Most surgeries
 • Some dental surgeries

What Are the Main Differences Between the NHS and Medicare?

Despite both the NHS and Medicare being public services and funded by taxpayers, there are still many differences between the two systems. These can include:

Patient Waiting Times

Over the past couple of years, there has been an increasing number of media reports surrounding the NHS concerning patient waiting times. Patient waiting times often refer to the time it takes to be seen and treated for medical problems, such as arranging a doctor’s appointment, booking an operation, or being seen in A&E.

Patient waiting times have proved even worse since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, with some patients waiting up to two years for their treatments. Statistics from June 2021 report that there is a total of 5.45 million people in the UK waiting for procedures; the highest number since records began in August 2007.

Conversely, research conducted by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare concluded that Medicare patients wait on average 37 days for their non-urgent surgery. Though dependant on severity and situation, it would appear that Medicare is quicker at seeing their patients than the NHS.

Cost of Prescriptions

Both healthcare providers require their citizens to pay for their prescriptions. However, NHS patients must pay the full prescription cost, whereas users of Medicare only have to pay for part of the cost, with Medicare funding the rest.

Dentistry and Ambulance Fees

Medicare does not cover certain medical services for its citizens. For example, Australians will need to pay for services such as visiting the dentist (certain dental surgeries are exempt) and the cost of using an ambulance. Because of these extra costs, many Australians opt to pay for private healthcare.

In the UK, using the ambulance service is free for Brits and the fees are covered by the NHS. What’s more, the NHS provides public dental care with some free services for 18-year-olds and under in full-time education, pregnant/postpartum women, and individuals on a low income.

Optometry Services

Both Medicare and the NHS do not cover any optometry products unless you are exempt (such as being 18 and under in full-time education in the UK). However, the NHS also doesn’t cover eye tests, whereas Medicare does. Brits must pay for their eye tests as well as the purchase of products such as glasses and contact lenses.

It’s unlikely for many Brits to have healthcare insurance as the only service they need to pay for is optometry. Several employers in the UK also provide cover for eye tests, with many workplaces giving their employees optical vouchers. Nonetheless, the occasional British person will buy health insurance, particularly if they can afford private healthcare.

What Other Services Are Not Covered by Medicare?

We’ve mentioned already that Medicare does not cover dentistry, optometry products and ambulance fees, but there are also other services that they do not cover; these include:

 • Hearing aids
 • Home nursing
 • Therapy services

Though cover in the NHS varies depending on an individual’s situation, in the UK, all the above can be funded via the NHS.

Which Country Has Better Healthcare – the UK or Australia?

Between Medicare and the NHS, the NHS offers a greater of free services, meaning fewer citizens need to take out health insurance or buy private healthcare. The only services not covered by the NHS are some optometry and dental services, with check-up appointment prices staying relatively low. However, the NHS has longer wait times, leaving many patients vulnerable to a late diagnosis and prolonging illnesses, etc.
