If you’re one of those people who have always wondered about moving to Australia, you may struggle to get a better opportunity than this. From November 2019, two new visa routes will open to the country, and if you have been weighing up the prospect of working in Australia may be enticed to take the leap.

Over the weekend, Sable International confirmed the proposal would officially come into law before the end of the year. Business Tech also report that a third new route was under consideration, but won’t open until 2022. But in five months’ time, you will be able to pursue the following options:

 • Skilled Work Regional Visa.
 • Skilled Employer-Sponsored Regional Visa.

Working in Australia: New visa routes for November 2019:

What is a Skilled Work Regional Visa?

 • Official name: Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491).

Revealed at the start of the year, this is a visa that would make working in Australia a doddle. That’s if you don’t mind where you go, though. This particular route would place you in towns and rural areas which desperately need a bigger migrant workforce.

Although isolated, regions like Darwin and Palmerston in the Northern Territory are still vibrant regions that offer all the perks of city living, with the comfort of suburban security on your doorstep. Having a “skilled” spouse or a STEM qualification could also help your application.

We spoke to Sam Hopwood, Australian immigration director at Sable International. He told us that anyone under 45 who can pass the English language test required for entrance to Australia is welcome to apply, as long as they’re qualified for one of the applicable 117 fields:

“Migrants are vital to the prosperity of Australia. A 2016 census showed that 151 regional areas in Australia were able to offset declining populations by encouraging international migrants. International migrants were actually the sole source of population growth for some small towns.”

Sam Hopwood

What is the Skilled Employer-Sponsored Regional Visa?

 • Official name: Skilled Employer-Sponsored Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 494)

It’s another application that would place you somewhere, and it’s not likely you’ll go to Sydney or Melbourne. The difference here is that you can be cherry-picked by a potential employer and have little else to worry about.

This one does not follow the “points-based system” as is the case with many other visas hopeful migrants have to obtain with a view to working in Australia. If an employer gives you a job offer in a relevant field and you meet the English language requirement, you’ll be on your way to regional Australia in a flash. It’s by far the simplest of the lot.

Australia’s Northern Territory needs you for work in 117 occupations! https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/move-to-australia/australias-northern-territory-needs-you-for-work/ Wed, 23 Jan 2019 04:56:17 +0000 https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/?p=2412039 There's an ambitious new plan to bring more foreign workers into Australia's wild north (think Crocodile Dundee country), but there are a few requirements.

If you’re planning on going to work in Australia, you may never get a better chance than this. The authorities Down Under have embarked on a wildly ambitious plan to bring more foreign employees into its Northern Territory (think Crocodile Dundee country) , but it comes with a few requirements.

How can I apply to work in Australia’s NT?

The Northern Territory (NT) – a sparsely-populated area of the country that’s looking to expand its horizons. Its capital is Darwin, which is home to less than 80,000 people. Nonetheless, it’s ripping good fun! The NT is perhaps better known as the home of Uluru.

Part of the requirements is to commit to working in the region for a minimum of three years. Once you’ve served that time, the idea is then to allow applicants to secure their permanent residency in the country, hoping that people will choose to stay in the Northern Territory. A link to application details appears at the bottom of this page.

Australia’s Minister for Immigration, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs, David Coleman, told SBS News that local businesses stand to benefit immensely from the Designation Area Migration Agreement (DAMA):

“Our first priority is always to fill jobs with Australians, but the immigration system can play an important role in helping to address regional skills gaps. I am pleased that we can continue to partner with the NT Government to support the skills needs of local businesses where Australian workers are not available to fill those jobs,” said Coleman.

Migrants hailed as “vital” to Aussie economy

We also spoke to Sam Hopwood, Australian immigration director at Sable International. He told us that anyone under 45 who can pass the English language test required for entrance to Australia is welcome to apply, as long as they’re qualified in one of the 117 fields:

“Migrants are vital to the prosperity of Australia. A 2016 census showed that 151 regional areas in Australia were able to offset declining populations by encouraging international migrants. International migrants were actually the sole source of population growth for some small towns.”

“To qualify, you need to be: younger than 45, meet the English language requirement have the relevant qualifications and skills for the advertised position that the employer is wanting to sponsor you in.”Sam Hopwood

The job list ranges from highly-skilled practices (veterinary surgeons, engineers, mechanics) to more common areas of work, such and caregiving and hairdressing.

It takes all sorts to build the sort of international community Coleman and his team are looking for. But is your occupation on the list? If you’ve got a touch of wanderlust and feel like setting up home in a quintessential part of Australia, the the NT is very much calling your name.

Golden Globes: Andy Samberg’s Black Panther joke shocks and amuses [VIDEO] https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/lifestyle/golden-globes-andy-sambergs-black-panther-joke-shocks-and-amuses-video/ Mon, 07 Jan 2019 09:42:59 +0000 https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/?p=2411890 Andy Samberg made reference to the Black Panther Party in his Golden Globes speech, with a joke that held a middle finger up towards the establishment.

The man famous for playing police officer Jake Peralta in Brooklyn 99 showed he had nothing but contempt for the rules at this year’s Golden Globes ceremony. Andy Samberg hosted the glitzy affair, but it would be his joke about the Black Panther movie that had tongues wagging at the after-party.

The Wakanda-based flick was nominated for a plethora of awards, yet somehow walked away empty-handed. However, fans of the Marvel film shouldn’t be too distressed. The Golden Globes are an indicator of what productions will secure Oscar nominations. The fight isn’t over, guys!

Making reference to the civil rights movement of the same name, Samberg mused about what it would be like if members of the Black Panther Party actually auditioned for the film. Then, with a dramatic change in tone, The Lonely Island frontman dropped the hammer.

Watch Andy Samberg deliver his Black Panther joke here

“Were there a bunch of old members of the actual Black Panther Party saying, ‘I can’t even get an audition?’ …Just kidding! They were all framed and murdered for wanting justice and equality, the world is and always has been a nightmare and it just seems worse now because of our phones.”

Reaction to Andy Samberg hosting the Golden Globes

Bluntly calling out the US government for state-sponsored atrocities? That took some balls, there’s no doubt. But social media users remain divided on the subject matter of the joke. Many feel it was unnecessary and ill-judged, whereas others revelled in Samberg’s decision to tell truth to power.

Meanwhile, the arguable highlight of that video is the expression on Black Panther Director Ryan Coogler’s face. He’s somewhere between bemusement and horror, and doesn’t seem to know what’s going on.

Seven things you must avoid saying in a job interview, according to experts https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/expat-life/seven-things-you-must-avoid-saying-in-a-job-interview-according-to-experts/ Wed, 02 Jan 2019 09:43:14 +0000 https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/?p=2411856 You've probably been boasting about your "perfectionist" habits, or "passion" for the role. But this doesn't go down well in a job interview.

The post Seven things you must avoid saying in a job interview, according to experts appeared first on Australian Times News.

]]>
We’ve all had a job interview that went so bad, we’ve wanted the ground to swallow us whole. It’s a rite of passage, and all you can do is learn from it ahead of the next time you shoot your shot. However, thanks to recruitment specialists Glassdoor, we’ve now got a cheat-sheet on what to avoid.

As Emily Moore writes for the company, there are seven common responses that instantly turn off any potential employers. They range from cliches to vague answers, and if you really do want to impress the panel, you’ll stay away from uttering these infamous last words…

Things you should avoid saying in a job interview:

Revealing too much when asked to “talk about yourself”

Personal health, family and sharing your flaws should all be avoided in the context of a job interview. Instead, lead the conversation towards your professional achievements. Speak about your work experience thus far and explain why it’s relevant to the current position.

Being vague and unclear when asked to “talk about the company”

It’s an essential part of the process when you apply for a new job. You have to do your research. Employers strongly dislike vague, basic details about their own companies. You should rather talk about their target market and business-critical information like the products and services they provide.

“I’m a team player”

Sounds mad, but this is a cliche that is now wearing very thin with businesses. It simply doesn’t provide any specifics about your own qualities, and suggests you’re happy to pass the buck. When expressing your team-working capabilities, talk about how you work within a team and what unique qualities you bring to the collective.

“I work too hard / I’m a perfectionist”

When pressed to give critical self-evaluation, many applicants see this as a “loophole” – as if they’ve found a way to circumvent any aspects of required professional improvement. The “perfectionist” response comes across as arrogant. Instead, you should be prepared to talk about an area of your skills set you’d like to improve.

“I want to be doing this job in five years time”

Employers often ask where candidates see themselves within the next five years. If you think a quick show of blind loyalty is going to impress them, you’re wrong. It actually comes across that you lack ambition. Applicants should look into what roles they can get promoted to in the near future (within the company) and list them as a career goal.

“I need a job”

Desperation just doesn’t cut it, we’re afraid. When applicants are asked why they want to work for this company, this isn’t the response they’re looking for. Devay Campbell is a career coach at Career 2 Cents, and he believes that the best way to shmooze in a job interview is with something like the following:

“You are a leader in your industry and I want to be aligned with an organization that’s on the cutting edge and leading the pack.”

Campbell also advises applicants to consider the mottos and mission statements of a prospective new company. If you can use these in your interview – and explain how the values align with you’re own – you’ll be in business.

“I am passionate about the role”

Employers usually finish interviews by asking why they should hire you for the position. It’s direct, and straight to the point. But if you list “passion” as one of your main reasons, it probably won’t cut the mustard.

What you need to do is demonstrate your passion, rather than just say you have it – for example, do you do anything outside of work that helps you grow in your professional life? Because that is the type of thing these guys are looking for. It’s also worth mentioning how your enthusiasm has helped you achieve specific results in other lines of work.

After a year of royal weddings, it seems 2019 will be all about the royal babies: Kensington Palace confirmed on Monday morning that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are expecting a child in the upcoming British springtime.

The couple’s fairytale marriage ceremony – watched by hundreds of millions of spectators across the world in May – saw the Duke and Duchess of Sussex tie the knot at Windsor Castle. This new arrival will be Meghan and Harry’s first child.

When is Meghan Markle’s baby due?

Both Harry and Meghan arrived in Australia on Monday as part of a tour of Oceania, where they will also visit Fiji, Tonga and New Zealand over a two-week period. This will be the first public appearance the couple make after announcing the news of a future prince or princess.

“Across this sixteen-day tour, Their Royal Highnesses’ programme will focus on youth leadership, and projects being undertaken by young people to address the social, economic, and environmental challenges of the region.” – royal.uk

Whispers about the pregnancy had begun a couple of weeks ago but intensified over the weekend. The haven for all things related to celebrity gossip – MailOnline – suspected that the Duchess of Sussex was hiding her baby bump when she arrived in Sydney.

Two strategically-placed purple folders over her stomach sent the rumour mill into overdrive, and sure enough, the veil of secrecy has been lifted by official royal sources.

In line for the throne

This latest addition to the family is the seventh in line to the throne.

Prince Charles is the next in line, and then Prince William will take the crown after him. It then gets passed down to the children of Wills in the order of when they were born. George, Charlotte and Louis are third, fourth and fifth in line respectively. Prince Harry has to settle for sixth.

The post 10 of the absolute toughest job interview questions a candidate could be asked appeared first on Australian Times News.

]]>
We’ve all been there: One minute, you’re absolutely killing it with your job interview questions. The next, you’ve been left stumped by a query straight out of left field.

Learning how to handle these obscure curveballs can be the difference between you or a competitor getting the gig. It’s a tough industry out there, and you can never be too prepared for an interview that could change the entire course of your career.

Career Coach Hallie Crawford recently spoke with recruitment website Glassdoor and shared a list of the ten toughest job interview questions currently doing the rounds. We’ve compacted her feedback and produced a quick guide on how to ace those trickier lines of inquiry.

How to answer the toughest job interview questions:

“If your current employer had an anniversary party for you, what five words would be written on the cake to describe you?”

How to answer: Don’t go over the top on this one. If you choose long adjectives, you might come across as a little over-confident. Instead, think of things co-workers and management have said about you recently – they’re the ones who are most familiar with your personality as an employee.

“Who in history would you want to go to dinner with and why?”

How to answer: Think about people who have mastered a technical craft and familiarise yourself with a particular actor, writer or scientist. Be prepared to talk about what you’d like to discuss, and why you admire them.

“Would you be able to name a brand that represents you as a person?”

How to answer: Here, you’ve got to distinguish between a brand you like and a brand that fits your persona. So if you’re a family-orientated, you might want to talk about companies that are family-owned and pride themselves on running their business with multiple generations of fathers, mothers, sons and daughters.

“Can you describe an instance where you had to make a decision without all of the necessary information?”

How to answer: Think positively. There must have been something you’ve achieved at work by going through things methodically and coming to the best decision you could, despite some information being missing. If you’ve ever bailed a colleague out for one of their mistakes, that could also come in handy.

“Can you sell me on one idea, and then sell me on the opposite of that idea?”

How to answer: Okay, now we’re getting technical. This is where candidates are advised to ask their interviewer for an example of a scenario. If they don’t play ball, recall something from a previous job where there was debate over different ways of doing something. Think about how you’d compromise in that situation.

“If a co-worker had an annoying habit, and it hindered your quality of work, how would you resolve it?”

How to answer: “Smacking them” wouldn’t get you very far. Instead, you’re encouraged to say that you’d think about steps towards a resolution before confronting them about it. Interviewers want to hear how you’d plan ahead in this circumstance.

“What part of the newspaper do you read first? What does this say about you?”

How to answer: Think about the company you’ve applied for. Are they sporty, or tech-based, or perhaps even in the political sphere? Tailor your answer for your audience. You can play fast and loose with this too, and link preference to personality – you could talk about a love of technology if you’re a “keen learner”.

“Throw your resume aside and tell me what makes you who you are?

How to answer: Yep, the “tell me a bit about yourself” part. Make sure you have prepared something about what makes you different to everyone else, or even an anecdote about getting into your chosen industry. Failing that, it’s always positive to talk about three values that you hold most dear.

“What’s wrong with your past or current employer?”

How to answer: You must not bash the company you work for, no matter what the situation is. Make the focus all about you instead. Talk about a need for a new, more challenging line of work and even ask what opportunities there are to grow at the company.

“Tell me about the worst manager you ever had?

How to answer: For the last of the tricky job interview questions, we remind you these aren’t therapy sessions. Go easy on whoever your boss from hell was, as you never know what executives operate in which circles. It’s advised you talk about management styles you didn’t enjoy, rather than personalities.

But what's earned it three top 10 places in the world's 'most liveable cities' index?

Life is great in Australia: and Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide are among the top ten most liveable cities in the world, according to a recent report that studied 140 countries.

The Global Liveability Index (GLI) for 2018 confirmed that the trio has made the peak of the extensive list, but all of them were pipped to the post by Vienna, Austria. In fact, Melbourne has grounds to be considerably miffed – they occupied the top spot in 2017, but dropped to second this year.

What areas does Australia rank highest in?

The index is compiled by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) and focuses on five key factors: Stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education and infrastructure. All these scores are totalled out of a hundred, and their average provides the coefficient.

Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide all registered perfect scores in the Education and Healthcare categories. Melbourne itself is seen as five points “less stable” than Vienna, which scored 100 out of 100. In all other four fields, the Aussie city had outscored its European rival.

Only Vancouver in Canada was ranked as having a better cultural lifestyle than Melbourne. But nonetheless, the major hubs Down Under remain a shining beacon for communities all over the world.

World’s top 10 most liveable cities

1. Vienna, Austria – 99.1.

2. Melbourne, Australia – 98.4.

5. Sydney, Australia – 97.4.

7. Toronto, Canada – 97.2.

8. Tokyo, Japan – 97.2.

9. Copenhagen, Denmark – 96.8.

10. Adelaide, Australia – 96.6.

There are also multiple entries for Canada and Japan, whereas Copenhagen flies the flag for Denmark and the beautiful Scandinavian region.

Where Australia has thrived, Africa has suffered. The ten least liveable cities in the world feature six from Africa. Lagos, Nigeria is the continent’s lowest-ranking municipality, scoring an overall rating of just 38.5.

Only Damascus – the war-torn capital of Syria – and Dhaka in Bangladesh fared worst than Lagos, out of all the cities surveyed.

World’s 10 least liveable cities

2. Dhaka, Bangladesh – 38.0.

Fresh from weathering a barrage of criticism over some outstanding points he made about Africa’s connections to the French World Cup victory, the US based South African comedian and host of The Daily Show, Trevor Noah, doesn’t really have a leg to stand on this time: Something he seems painfully aware of…

What is Trevor Noah’s Aboriginal joke?

On Sunday evening, one Twitter user shared a link to an old routine Noah performed regarding Indigenous Australians. He joked that the population were bereft of “beautiful” women:

“All women of every race can be beautiful. And I know some of you are sitting there now going, ‘Oh Trevor, yeah, but I’ve never seen a beautiful Aborigine.’”

His gag then goes on to talk about them being better at oral sex, due to their ability to play the didgeridoo. The joke is tasteless at best, which has triggered many Twitter users and Aboriginal citizens, too.

Trevor Noah responds to Twitter backlash

Noah since took to Twitter himself to face up to the accusations and disowned the routine. He’s previously stated that he’s not proud of the joke, and vowed that the clip – which has since been removed from YouTube – won’t be promoted any more. Did his statement go down well? Not really.

His failure to apologise has been a bone of contention for his detractors, who remain unsatisfied with his behaviour.

How your parents and grandparents can help you get a British passport https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/expat-life/how-your-parents-and-grandparents-can-help-you-get-a-british-passport/ Tue, 17 Jul 2018 12:20:45 +0000 https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/?p=2388320 The new British citizenship solution is giving some people with British descent renewed hope of obtaining UK nationality through their parents and grandparents.

The post How your parents and grandparents can help you get a British passport appeared first on Australian Times News.

]]>
Changes in British passport and citizenship case law are enabling further claims to British nationality, based on having a grandparent (and, in rare cases, a great-grandparent) born in the UK. These claims are known as ‘double descent claims’.

The UK Government introduced legislation in 2002 and again in 2009 attempting to address gender discrimination in British Nationality legislation affected those born before 1/1/83. However, elements of gender discrimination still existed.

Also see: How changes to UK law may provide more dual citizenship drama in Australia

Those who were born to British mothers who were not born in the UK could not take advantage of the various double descent provisions of the earlier law that were available to men.

This was because their mother would not have been able to take the necessary steps in the past to make a claim in the second generation.

Changes to British passport law

A recent Supreme Court Judgement in the UK has made it clear that it is unlawful for the UK. Government to impose a requirement from the past on new applicants for citizenship where it was not lawfully possible for that requirement to be met at the time.

In short, this means that if you were born outside of the UK between 31/5/62 and 1/1/83, your mother was British not through being born in the UK (perhaps because her father was born in the UK) you may have a claim to British citizenship now.

Also see: How the Australian Constitution, and its custodians, ended up so wrong on dual citizenship

As ever, nothing is as simple as is seems. There may be those who meet the criteria who will not qualify for British citizenship.

Why would I not qualify for a British passport?

This could be perhaps because, amongst other things, they cannot provide proof of the grandparents’ marriage. Equally, the full extent or limitations of the case law from this judgement will not be known in full until the range of potential qualifiers are examined by the Home Office in the UK.

Despite the recent Supreme Court Judgement, gender discrimination is still present in the UK’s nationality laws and the Home Secretary is under pressure in the UK to make further changes. Other possible routes to citizenship by double descent at the present time include the following.

Applicants born after 1 January 1983 and presently under 18 years of age:

There are special provisions in British nationality law for children under 18 that may make it possible to claim British nationality. Factors which benefit such applications include:

A) UK residence of the British Parent; or

B) Whether the citizenship of the child’s country of birth has been conferred at the point of birth.

It can be important to take action before a child turns 18. After the 18th birthday, several rights to British nationality fall away and are usually lost forever.

Applicants born after 1 January 1983 and presently over the age of 18 years:

If you were born outside of the UK after 1 January 1983 and have a UK-born grandparent may have a claim to British nationality if:

A) You have a UK-born grandfather who was in UK Government Service at the time of the descendant parent’s birth; or…

B) You have a parent who;

 1. Had a non UK-born mother; and
 2. Did not have a UK-born father and the mother was registered as a British citizen between 2 February 1979 and 31 December 1982

C) You or a parent were born in a former British colony, subject to further criteria being met.

Applicants born before 1 January 1983:

Those born outside of the UK between 1 January 1949 and 31 December 1982 and who have a UK-born grandparent may be able to claim British nationality in certain circumstances.

This is a complex area of British nationality and every case must be assessed on an individual basis. The following are the most common;

 • You (or a parent) were born in a former British territory. This excludes the main Commonwealth countries of 1949 (Australia, Canada and New Zealand) but includes India, South Africa and (Southern) Rhodesia at various times.
 • You or a parent was registered as a citizen of the UK and colonies or a federal citizen of Rhodesia and Nyasaland.
 • A parent was in Crown service at the time of your birth.
 • Your parents married before 1949 and your paternal grandfather was born in the UK.

The examples above represent brief selection of options available and are by no means complete. This route to getting a British passport can prove tricky, which is where Sable International can help:

If you feel that you fall into any of the categories listed above, are affected by the recent Supreme Court Judgement or simply wish to know whether you have any prospect of acquiring British Nationality, contact Sable International:

The post Moving abroad: Salary versus rent in five of the most popular cities for expats appeared first on Australian Times News.

]]>
Compared to previous generations, many of us have been lucky enough to travel around the world for many different reasons, either for pleasure and curiosity of exploring what we can find behind the doors of our comfort zone or simply for gap years or educational exchanges.

Whichever your reason might be and even though most popular destinations among expats include the UK, the USA and, of course, Australia there are some cities that definitely attract a larger share of expats eager to live and work abroad.

Nestpick, a search aggregator for apartment rentals all over the world, has analysed different factors in some of the most attractive cities for expats in order to assess the costs of renting a flat there and furnishing it.

So what’s the salary vs rent situation in some of the worlds most popular expat cities?

*Values given in US dollars for ease of comparison

London, UK

London has increased its immigrant population dramatically in the last years. Some studies show that one in three people who (in 2016) live in the British capital were born abroad and as a consequence, immigrants are set to become half the city’s population within the next 15 years.

The rents in London are very high of course, in part due to this fact. According to the Nestpick’s study, the minimum salary required to be able to afford rent and live in the city of Big Ben is $5,478.

It might sound like a lot, but if you consider the facts that a standard furnished apartment is estimated to cost circa $1,589 and that a one-way Tube ticket currently stands at around, that minimum salary amount would probably diminish quicker than anywhere else.

London currently stands in the 6th place of the top 100 cities to live in worldwide.

Dublin, Ireland

Dublin can be a very good option for someone willing to experience the whole English speaking experience in Europe first-hand when moving abroad, without having to go to the British capital. Dublin can be just as good, if not even better.

The estimated rent for a furnished apartment now stands at $1,202, significantly lower than London’s and the minimum salary required to live in the capital of the third biggest European island is $4,145.

Dublin is ranked as the 21st city on the list of the top 100 cities to live in.

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Still, in Europe, another outstanding option to move to is without a hint of a doubt, the Dutch capital. There is something about the vibes in this city that has been attracting new residents for centuries.

Your estimated income should stand at around $4,326, if you were considering Amsterdam as your new home since the predicted furnished apartment value is currently around $1,254.

Amsterdam is city number 18 in the top 100 cities worldwide list.

Melbourne, Australia

For the non-Aussies among us, head Down Under! A big bunch of expats have at some point considered moving further away and Melbourne is usually one of their first options. The city is located in the most southern point of the Aussie continent and is seen as the Australian capital of culture and sports.

The estimated rent value in Melbourne is now around $1,024 and the minimum salary required to live in the southern city wanders around $3,532 per month.

Melbourne stands in the 30th rank of the top 100 cities to live in worldwide.

New York, USA

Last but not least, if the American dream is what you are aiming for when moving abroad, New York might be it. The American urban jungle is one of the most visited cities on planet Earth and its minimum required salary grazes $7,000.

The estimated monthly rent stands at around $1,987. Not too bad for the 2nd city in the ranking of the top 100 cities to live in worldwide. Good ole New York!

Donald Trump is set to visit the UK next week, but he’ll be greeted by a wave of protesters and a giant inflatable of himself wearing a nappy. Ladies and gentlemen, get ready to meet Trump Baby.

As confirmed by iNews, The City of London as finally given permission to a protest group who want to fly a giant inflatable of Trump over the capital when he arrives in London on Friday 13 July. Perhaps not for the first time, the US President will be full of hot air.

Donald Trump’s UK visit

Initially, the mayor’s office were reluctant to let it go ahead but had their arms twisted by a large swell of support for the creative demonstration. The Trump Baby itself is truly a sight to behold…

Leo Murray is an activist for the campaign and admitted had been a struggle to get the approval. However, he was elated with the local government’s u-turn:

“We didn’t get off to the best start with the Mayor’s office over this, who originally told us that they didn’t recognise Trump Baby as legitimate protest.”

“But, following a huge groundswell of public support for our plan, it looks like City Hall has rediscovered its sense of humour. Trump Baby will fly.”

How can I see the Trump Baby over London?

It will officially take to the skies next Friday morning. They have been given permission to fly their inflatable for two hours above Parliament Square in London. The iconic venue is also home to Westminster and Big Ben.

Several high-profile protests are being orchestrated across London to show Donald Trump that he might not be as well-loved as he thinks he is. Scandals ranging from the endorsement of white supremacists to separating young immigrant children from their families has marred his time in office.

Trump, of course, extolled the values of free speech in his election campaign. It will be very interesting to see what he makes of a 20-foot inflatable of himself hovering above London. After all, the liberty to express yourself is a two-way street, Donald.

But was it the right call or were we robbed?

The post WORLD CUP: France vs Australia VAR penalty – should it have been given? appeared first on Australian Times News.

]]>
For the first time in history, a penalty has been awarded through the use of VAR – or “Video Assistant Referee” – at the World Cup. Needless to say, it’s divided opinion worldwide, as well as broke the hearts of Socceroos fans.

France’s Antoine Griezmann was man adjudged to have been fouled by a desperate Aussie defender after a video review when the referee on the pitch didn’t spot the indiscretion.

France benefit from VAR

Josh Ridson made a sliding tackle that faintly clipped the back of the striker’s ankles who fell to the ground. After initially waving away Griezmann’s appeals the referee was told by the VAR officials to review the incident, which he did on a TV specially set up on the sideline for the purpose, and ultimately he overturned his decision.

Griezmann then stepped up to convert the penalty, making history in the process. It’s the first time video technology has a had a direct impact on a goal at the World Cup finals.

But was it the right call? Some remain unconvinced:

Others, however, feel that the right decision was made:

Australia then went on to equalize with a penalty of their own just moments later, after a clear handball from Samuel Umitti. This was a lot less controversial, and Australia were able to draw level almost instantly.

However, Paul Pogba’s deft chip late in the game saw France home to a 2-1 win.

Australia inches closer to fast-track visa plan for South African farmers https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/news/australia-inches-closer-to-fast-track-visa-plan-for-south-african-farmers/ Sat, 09 Jun 2018 12:10:01 +0000 https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/?p=2387992 Australia's Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton says things are "not too far off" from being finalised.

The post Australia inches closer to fast-track visa plan for South African farmers appeared first on Australian Times News.

]]>
After a flurry of rhetoric and policy debate, Australia’s politicians – and Peter Dutton in particular – have recently been tight-lipped on proposals to offer a fast-track visa to South African farmers.

According to Sky News Australia, things are set to pick up again soon.

Why does Australia want to offer a fast-track visa?

A week after South Africa’s Parliament passed a bill allowing the governing ANC to pursue land expropriation without compensation policies, Australia’s Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton pronouncements made international headlines.

Embed from Getty Images

Exacerbated by South Africa’s alarming number of farm murders, Dutton went public with his idea to offer farmers in Mzansi refugee status, giving them the chance to hot-foot it over to Australia in double-quick time.

South African farmers to learn more about Aus visa

There’s been plenty of support from Aussie politicians, but in the last six weeks, it has become a peripheral issue.

Further developments seem to be on the horizon, though. Dutton spoke to Sky News Australia earlier the week, claiming that his department “isn’t too far off” from finalising the historic deal.

Around 200 South African farmers have applied for refugee status since the end of February. Although there is no concrete system in place for this specific route, a large number of landowners have decided to chance their arm already.

Who supports the idea?

Some in the Australian government have made it very clear just how welcome farming migrants would be. Both the Auditor-General Christian Porter and Multiculturalism Minister Alan Tudge have insisted that the nation opens its borders to SA’s farmers.

Scott Buchholz, an MP for the Liberal Party, is the latest high-profile name to encourage Dutton to move ahead with the visa plans.

“The South African residents in my electorate make an excellent contribution to the community. They even employ Australians and grow our economy. They are amazing contributors,” he said.

“I believe there are already provisions under humanitarian grounds for white South Africans. I welcome both white and other South African communities who want to integrate here like we’ve seen with Nigerian and Somalian immigrants.”

Australia’s most recent communication on the matter didn’t seem to suggest that South Africans would receive “priority treatment” over other refugees. They would, however, receive preferential treatment to other “standard” visa applications.

In something resembling a change of tune, it would seem like the Australian government aren’t exactly putting SA farmers to the top of their priorities.

]]>
As reported by the ABC, a Senate meeting on Tuesday raised the contentious issue of giving South African landowners refugee status in Australia, amid fears of ongoing farm attacks and the effects of land expropriation without compensation.

How many South Africans have applied for a refugee visa in Australia?

The debate revealed that, so far, 213 applications had been received from South African farmers who were hoping for a fast-tracked humanitarian visa.

Malisa Golightly is a representative of the immigration and border protection department. She was answering questions posed to her by Senator Nick McKim. Her response indicated that no “special treatment” would be put in place for our farmers.

“They are being assessed according to the criteria in the law. No, there are no additional requirements from the Minister [for South African farmers],” Golightly said.

“In terms of processing, the normal arrangements apply where we assess the claims against whichever is the relevant criteria.”

SA farmers told to wait their turn

Golightly confirmed that those with land fearing the worst are more than welcome to apply for refugee status, but won’t receive prioritisation.

It marks something of a climb-down by Australia, after months of championing a quick influx of Saffas. The proposals were first suggested by Peter Dutton in March, as the ANC were given the go-ahead to pursue land expropriation plans.

The Home Affairs chief suggested that farmers in South Africa faced persecution, and needed help from a “civilised country” – these comments caused an uproar, resulting in South Africa requesting an official apology

Several MPs have also backed the idea, with one suggesting that up to 10,000 migrants should be given refugee status.

However, it now seems like there’ll be no queue-jumping for the SA farmers.

Kensington Palace have given the world its first official glimpse of the royal family’s newest member, baby Prince Louis of Cambridge.

The heart-melting snaps of the royal family’s newest member, Prince Louis of Cambridge were shared on Sunday, and have gone down a storm on social media. Louis, who was born on Monday 23 April, seems to be getting accustomed to the good life already…

The first image shared was of a three-day-old Louis, wearing his cute white babygrow and propped up against a pillow. At 72 hours old, the young chap already has a better hairline than his dad!

Prince Louis: The big reveal…

The second photo is all kinds of wonderful. His sister Charlotte, aged three, is more than happy to share her love for her young sibling. She’s pictured holding her baby brother and kissing him on the forehead. How sweet!

A game of thrones

It seems the pair are already best buddies, as well as royal children. There were no snaps of Prince George with his younger brother. The four-year-old will no doubt be appearing in one soon, though.

It’ll be interesting to see if Charlotte and Louis are still doting on each other in the distant future: Charlotte is the first female member of the royal family who won’t be replaced in line to the throne by a younger male sibling, due to a 2013 law change.

Something for George to playfully laud over Louis in the future, perhaps?

South Africa’s proposed move towards land expropriation without compensation is catching the attention of Australia’s immigration department.

Peter Dutton, Australia’s Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Immigration and Border Protection, was speaking to the media this week, saying that creating a fast-track visa for “persecuted” white South African farmers was up for consideration:

“If you look at the footage and read the stories, you hear the accounts, it’s a horrific circumstance they face. From what I have seen, they [white South African farmers] need help from a civilised country like ours.”

“We want people who want to come here, abide by our laws, integrate into our society, work hard, not lead a life on welfare. And I think these people deserve special attention and we’re certainly applying that special attention now.”

Fast-track visas for white South African farmers?

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Dutton has directed the Home Affairs Department to explore whether the farmers can be accepted into Australia through refugee, humanitarian or other visas, including the in-country persecution visa category.

The minister’s comments prompted Australian media to report on farm murders in South Africa, something that Peter Dutton may use to his advantage in pursuing this legislation.

Should farmers get “refugee” status?

The fears over land expropriation without compensation have been developing since Parliament passed an ANC motion, allowing the party to go ahead and implement their redistribution plans.

The DA has staunchly expressed their opposition, claiming that a non-compensatory approach is bad news for the economy. They are against expropriation – which gives land to the state – and favour reform, which aims to focus on issues of restitution.

Dutton completed his address by saying he was “confident” Australia could agree on a deal with the South African government.

10 of the most outrageously offensive Halloween costumes ever https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/lifestyle/entertainment/most-offensive-halloween-costumes/ Wed, 25 Oct 2017 01:51:19 +0000 https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/?p=2385935 IN VERY BAD TASTE: We are pleading with you, DO NOT look to this for frighteningly fancy dress inspiration.

The post 10 of the most outrageously offensive Halloween costumes ever appeared first on Australian Times News.

]]>
It guarantees us a night of frights, but how far is too far with Halloween costumes?

The spooky spectacle wouldn’t be the same without forced-fun fancy dress (feel free to disagree), and revellers celebrating all things macabre and ghoulish. However, even in a festival of sheer horror, there are still lines that shouldn’t be crossed.

With great tradition, comes great stupidity though. We have scoured the web for 10 of the worst ideas for Halloween costumes ever.

The most offensive Halloween costumes:

1. Anna Rexia (Anorexia)

(Amazon.com)

Halloween is a favourite celebration of teens and young adults alike. So taking the piss out of a serious body image issue is beyond crass. The costume is designed to show ribs, hip bones and the appearance of a malnourished patient. Just. Why?

2. Anne Frank

You can probably gauge just how low the lowest can go by now. Although it’s since been remarketed as ‘WW2 evacuee girl’ – still very odd, when you think about it – this costume has also been sold as an ‘Anne Frank’ outfit. What the actual hell is wrong with people?

3. Mental Patients

(BBC / ASDA)

Two British supermarket chains found themselves in hot water four years ago, when they marketed costumes that trivialised mental health issues. Asda dropped its “mental patient fancy dress costume”, and Tesco later withdrew its “psycho ward” outfit. Both stores apologised for any offence caused and agreed to make donations to the mental health charity, Mind.

4. Nazis, sexualised or otherwise

First of all, there are far too many Nazis marching up and down the streets outside of Halloween. Yet the Nazi costume remains a ‘shock-horror’ favourite for people with absolutely no decency. People have even ‘sexed-up’ their Nazi outfits over the years. We’re genuinely lost for words.

5. Flight Attendants from crashed Asiana Airlines flight

(Facebook)

Three guys decided to dress up as bloody flight attendants from Asiana Airlines Flight 214, which crash-landed at San Francisco International Airport. The crash killed three people and left dozens of people with life-altering injuries. This was fair game for these three, though. They even put racist names on their ID badges. Classy.

6. Trayvon Martin and George Zimmerman

(Facebook)

This really does tick all the boxes for fans of abject racism. Back in 2012, African-American teenager Trayvon Martin was shot dead by George Zimmerman; a white police officer who opened fire on the unarmed boy. One of the most shambolic Halloween costumes poked fun at America’s racial tensions and the death of a 17-year-old boy. Genuinely terrible stuff.

7. Walter Palmer (Cecil the Lion’s killer)

(Costumeish)

If there’s anything more pathetic than paying to a kill a lion to make you feel manly, it is probably this. This is a big hit with anyone who wants to hide the fact they have no personality. Dressing up as a morally-bankrupt dentist is painfully humourless.

8. The Twin Towers

What’s going through their head, here? Personifying the worst terrorist attack in history isn’t ‘banter’. It is a desperate, sad plea for attention that spits in the face of tragedy. It’s overtly provocative and begs for trouble.

9. Terrorist

A lot of people thinking donning traditional Gulf-state gear and stitching a few fake explosive devices to their costume is a witty way to announce themselves at a fancy dress party. Hate to break it to you lot, but you all look like dicks when you do this.

10. Boston Marathon Bomb Victim

Apparently, wherever there is tragedy, there is piss-poor taste. Three died and dozens suffered horrific injuries when bombs were detonated at the finish line. Dressing as someone caught up in the carnage is a middle-finger to the brave people who have had to deal with the suffering.

Why the Las Vegas shooting must be called a terror attack https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/news/why-the-las-vegas-shooting-must-be-called-a-terror-attack/ Mon, 02 Oct 2017 13:09:44 +0000 https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/?p=2385749 OPINION & ANALYSIS: More than 50 people massacred at a festival in Las Vegas. Police have described the suspect, 64-year-old Stephen Paddock, as a 'lone wolf', rather than a terrorist... Why might that be?

The post Why the Las Vegas shooting must be called a terror attack appeared first on Australian Times News.

]]>
The unspeakable horror that unfolded in Las Vegas on Sunday night (local time) has left the world dumbfounded again. Party goers, revellers, young adults. All gunned down by a man with hatred in his soul, and a desire to strike fear into the heart of America.

Stephen Paddock, 64, has been named as the suspect in shooting more than 50 people attending the Route 91 country music festival. From his hotel room, he opened fire on scores of people. He took advantage of the vulnerable and the weak, and he picked them off one by one before being shot dead himself by Las Vegas Police.

The deadliest shooting in ‘recent US history’

It is the deadliest shooting in recent American history. It surpassed the Orlando club massacre last year, where Omar Mateen shot and killed 49 people inside the Florida nightspot.

Police confirmed that Mateen’s attack on innocent party goers was terrorist-related. They identified Mr Paddock as a ‘lone-wolf’, however. They have got it horribly wrong.

Stephen Paddock wasn’t radicalised by ISIS. He didn’t shout ‘Allahu Akbar’ as he opened fire, nor was he a foreigner or a man who grew his beard long. Does that absolve him from being labelled a terrorist?

We’re going do things by the book here. The Collins English Dictionary, to be precise.

(CED Online)

A terrorist is a terrorist

At its purest form, any acts of violence which create widespread panic and fear are considered terrorist offences. Opening fire on a crowd of defenceless concert-goers, regardless of political aims and motivations, is a terrorist act.

The Las Vegas shooter perhaps isn’t demanding a caliphate across America like certain other terrorists. But make no mistake, Stephen Paddock is exceptionally radicalised.

The gun culture in the US has made him a terrorist. The country’s perverse obsession with firearms and saturation amongst their culture has infected his brain in the exact same way ISIS propaganda manages to reel in recruits.

Nevada, an exceptionally lax state for gun control, doesn’t even require background checks for those who want to buy a gun. Just take that in for a second: Regardless of background, mental health issues, or previous convictions, you can waltz into a store – permit-less – and leave with a firearm.

Gun culture is radicalising Americans

This entitlement to guns is utterly destructive. Their access and availability has proven deadly time and time again. The gunman in this case has taken advantage of this situation and acted upon their own beliefs to carry out a mass terror killing.

We respect the intense workload that Nevada State and Las Vegas police have to get through. We know that they are doing exceptionally heroic work in such horrific circumstances. But calling this man simply a ‘lone wolf’ is a huge mistake.

Like Dylan Roof, Elliot Rodger, Aaron Alexis, Adam Lanza, James Holmes and the hundreds of homegrown US terrorists before him, Stephen Paddock is clearly not on his own. In fact, there is nothing ‘lone’ about this. Far from being an isolated incident, this is Groundhog Day.

Las Vegas tells a sad, familiar tale…

Gun culture has allowed terrorism to grow in America. It has fostered a disgusting ideology, and it is unapologetically defended by its fundamentalist believers.

Las Vegas is the epitome of this. We send our prayers, condolences and every last bit of hope to those affected by the tragedy. We live in hope that something, someday will be done to tackle America’s most radical market, however.

Choosing to work abroad is the greatest leap of faith a person can take: Finding a new home, lifestyle and job can be difficult. However, it seems setting yourself up and going to work in Australia is hardly rocket science.

Down Under isn’t a tough place to find work in. And no, you won’t be limited to menial jobs just so you can gain access to work in Australia. This is a land of genuine opportunity, and there are chances that are begging to be taken by highly-motivated immigrants.

Gold Coast, Australia, by EPSTOCK Images

We’ve done our homework, and found eight professions that are in desperate need of a fresh work-force:

Industry and Job Vacancies for work in Australia:

1) Teaching and educational roles

Good job we did our homework, eh? It’s worth noting that Secondary School teachers are the number one occupation sub-type Australia is looking for. The Department of Australia Immigration allocated 8,032 spots for secondary school teachers last year.

Early Childhood (Pre-primary) and Special Needs teachers are next up in terms of demand. There are 1,822 and 1,126 available spots allocated for each occupation sub-type respectively. Unfortunately demand for Primary School teachers is low.

Aspiring applicants are often surprised to learn that post-qualification work experience in teaching isn’t actually a prerequisite for eligibility, but it can help due to the points criteria required for an Australia visa application.

2) Construction Management

Large infrastructure projects, commercial developments and high rise residential projects are still driving strong demand for construction professionals across all disciplines.

Construction supremos are needed for cities like Melbourne. (Tourism Australia)

The Department of Immigration has allocated 5,289 spots for construction managers for the 2016/17 year. Current demand is strongest in NSW.

Although many aspiring migrants have skills in construction management, to be eligible to apply under this occupation requires that you have a bachelor degree with a highly relevant field of study and prove you possess highly relevant post qualification experience.

3) Nursing

Registered nurses and midwifes are in short supply in Australia. This is a popular position for many migrant workers. Although, nurses with unrecognised overseas qualifications usually have to undergo some form of bridging course.

Nurses who were educated in countries not recognised by Australian authorities will be required to undertake accredited Competency assessment courses. Once registered, you then apply for a working visa. After that, you must find an employer who is willing to sponsor you for a four-year working visa in Australia.

4) Accounting and Finance

The amount of jobs in accounting and finance is expected to increase by 21,400 in the years leading up to 2017, due to the downturn of positions from the GFC.

However, there has been strong competition for available spots, with applicants currently requiring more than the minimum 60 points in order to progress their application.

5) Tradespeople

Electricians have been identified as an area with a large skills deficiency, and the Department of Immigration has allocated 9,345 available spots for this trade in the 2016/17 year

According to ‘Master Electricians Australia’, electricians are therefore listed in the top 10 occupations expected to provide the largest number of new jobs in Australia over the next five years.

Metal fitters and machinists, carpenters, motor mechanics, and plumbers are also in high demand to work in Australia with spots allocated by the Department of Immigration in 2016/17 in excess of 5,000 for each of these trades. However, most trade occupations will generally require that you have a trade qualification, and five years of experience in your trade (which includes time spent in training).

6) IT Professionals

According to submissions from skills assessors to the Department of Immigration, there is expected demand for a further 100,000 ICT professionals in Australia over the next six years.

Computer network and systems engineers, ICT business analysts, system analysts, software engineers, and analyst and developer programmers are all on the skilled occupation list. However, Software and app programmers lead the pack in terms of demand, with 5,662 available spots allocated in the 2016/17 year.

7) Digital Marketing Staff

Advertising is becoming more and more prevalent online, due to global technology development. Companies are creating online business and require an online digital marketing strategy. As this happens, more qualified marketing professionals are required, creating a strong demand for specialists in Australia.

8) Engineers

There has been strong demand for Engineers in recent years. Largely in the industries of civil infrastructure, manufacturing, mining, and defence.

Engineers are wanted to create more infrastructures like Story Bridge. (Tourism Australia)

Although, on the opposite end of the scale, major infrastructure projects across Australia have boosted demand for this type of engineering professional. Leading the pack in terms of spots available are: Civil, structural, geo-technical, and transport engineers. There were 2,174 spots allocated for the 2016/17 year by the Department of Immigration.

The average civil engineer is bachelor degree qualified however, and most are employed in NSW, Queensland, and Victoria.

Passengers on the London Underground have been injured due to an explosion on a Tube train earlier this morning.

The incident, now declared by police to be a terrorist incident, occurred on a District Line train at Parsons Green station in South-West London. The BBC have shared pictures of a white bucket on fire inside a carrier bag, suspected to be the device that caused the explosion.

Witnesses have described seeing people suffer facial injuries from the blast, and people getting hurt in the subsequent stampede to escape the packed train carriage.

The proposed tougher English test for Australian citizenship has been hugely divisive downunder.

The bill was passed in Australia’s parliamentary lower house on Monday, which will make the current tests to acquire Australian citizenship a little tougher.

Once the lower house approves a bill, it is sent to the Senate (upper house) for debate and then ultimately, a vote as to whether it should become law.

The changes to the citizenship tests aren’t wholesale, but they have raised the bar for an English speaking skills-set.

What’s on the Australian Citizenship Test?

Those who struggle with English – despite transferable work skills and a genuine desire for integration – will now find it even more difficult to live permananetly in Australia

There are two sides and polarising opinions attached to this move. The government are positive that it will make Australia a safer place, as explained by Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton:

Why it will work…

 • English Language is crucial for integration and employment
 • The changes will exclude those who do not value what it means to be Australian
 • People coming into Australia under these rules will do better with integration

“Australian citizenship should be highly valued and the government’s changes will ensure that it is a privilege obtained by only those who’ve demonstrated the most sincere commitment to Australia, our values and respect for our laws, as it should be.”

Moving to Australia

Australia’s opposing Labor party have denounced the bill, however. Their MP Jason Clare challenged the proposals set out by Mr Dutton, and claimed that the changes would be harmful to Australia.

Why it may not work…

(According to Jason Clare)

 • Only people with university-level English skills will be able to pass the tests
 • It excludes a section of society that would be very helpful to the Australian workforce
 • New citizenship tests aren’t the answer. Australia must do more to boost these skills

“The better your English, the better your chance of getting a job, the better your chance of getting ahead, the better your chance of integrating properly into our society.

But that doesn’t mean we should be denying people citizenship because they don’t have university English skills. It means we should be doing more to boost these skills.”

The citizenship changes have been referred to a senate inquiry, which is due to report back before September 4.

Might as well face it, study confirms you really can be addicted to love https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/news/might-as-well-face-it-study-confirms-you-really-can-be-addicted-to-love/ Mon, 01 May 2017 14:57:03 +0000 https://www.australiantimes.co.uk/?p=2384209 Research suggests brain regions and neurochemicals involved in addiction and romantic bonding are similar, and propose there are many similarities between everyday romantic attachment and addiction.

Researches from the US National Library of Medicine reviewed 64 studies of love and addiction published over the last 60 years. They have put the ‘addiction’ into two categories, the first one being the “narrow view”:

This is where people who feel lonely when they’re single, and go straight from one relationship to the next, could have what the researchers call a “narrow” type of love addiction. This can be caused by abnormal processes in the brain that boost reward signals.

And then there’s the “broad” type of love addiction:

Love addiction is more like an appetite, where we seek out to satisfy a need. This category suggests that to love someone is literally to be addicted to them, though perhaps only weakly.

There is a complex neuroscience explanation for all this – which is reassuring in some ways, knowing that scientists aren’t just listening to 80s jams and thinking “you know what, this would be a GREAT research topic”.

The US NLM argues that brain regions and neurochemicals involved in addiction and romantic bonding are similar, and propose there are “many” similarities between everyday romantic attachment and addiction.

Their paper concludes:

“There is now abundant behavioural, neurochemical and neuroimaging evidence to support the claim that love is (or at least that it can be) an addiction, in much the same way that chronic drug-seeking behaviour can be termed an addiction.

People whose lives are negatively impacted by love ought to be offered support and treatment opportunities analogous to those that we extend to substance abusers.”

So there you have it. If you have ever wondered why you do stupid, embarrassing, painfully awkward things in front of people you are attracted to, don’t worry about it. You are an addict at the mercy of your neurochemicals. It’s not your fault your crush probably hates you.

Whilst writing and reading this, I haven’t been able to get Robert Palmer’s ‘Addicted to Love’ out of my head. Perhaps someone needs to research if you can be addicted to Addicted To Love?
